Ryan Lochte, one of the most decorated swimmers in Olympic history, has sold three of his six gold medals at auction for a total of $385,520. The auction was conducted by Goldin Auctions, with the highest bid coming for his gold medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which he won as part of the 4×200 meters freestyle relay team alongside fellow swimmer Michael Phelps. That particular medal fetched an impressive $183,000.

The other two medals sold included the gold from the 4×200 meters freestyle relay at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, which went for $122,000, and the gold from Athens in 2004, which sold for $80,000. Lochte expressed on social media that he never swam for the medals themselves, stating, “My passion has always been to be one of the best swimmers in the world. Those medals? They were just the icing on the cake of an incredible journey.”

Currently, Lochte is navigating a divorce from his wife, Kayla Reid, who filed for separation after seven years of marriage. This recent auction follows a previous sale in 2022, when he sold six of his bronze and silver Olympic medals for $166,000.

Legacy and Controversies

Lochte has accumulated a total of 12 Olympic medals during his career, making him the third most decorated swimmer in Olympic history, trailing only behind Phelps and Katie Ledecky, who has 14 medals. While his achievements in the pool are significant, they have been overshadowed by various controversies, including a notorious incident at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he claimed he and three teammates were victims of an armed robbery. An investigation later revealed that this story was fabricated.

Currently, Lochte is working on a memoir detailing his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, as well as the fallout from the aforementioned scandal. His journey through fame, challenges, and personal growth reflects the complexities of life as an elite athlete.
