Renowned Fashion Designer Paul Costelloe Dies at 80
Fashion designer Paul Costelloe passed away on November 21, 2025, at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy that intertwined Irish heritage with international fashion. His career spanned nearly five decades, during which he became known for his mastery of linen and tailored designs, making significant contributions to the fashion industry in Ireland and abroad.
Born on June 23, 1945, in Dublin, Costelloe was the youngest of seven children in a family with a rich history in textiles. His father, William Costelloe, trained as a tailor and ran a raincoat factory in Dublin, instilling in his son a profound appreciation for fabrics. Costelloe’s journey into fashion began after he attended the Grafton Academy of Fashion Design in Dublin. Although he did not complete his formal education there, he leveraged his charm and artistic talent to navigate the industry.
Costelloe’s career took him to major fashion hubs including Paris, Milan, and New York. He initially gained experience working for renowned brands and retailers, such as Marks & Spencer and La Rinascente in Italy. His return to Ireland in 1978 marked the beginning of his own label, which he managed profitably for 47 years. His designs were highlighted by their use of high-quality linen, a fabric he cherished for its connection to Irish heritage.
He gained notable recognition after designing for Diana, Princess of Wales. Costelloe’s relationship with the British royal family began discreetly when a member of Diana’s staff discovered his work in a boutique in Windsor. His designs for Diana, particularly her linen dresses, captured the attention of audiences worldwide. He continued to create for her until her tragic death in 1997.
Throughout his career, Costelloe was not just a designer but also a commentator on fashion. In 1998, he famously described Irish women as “ambitious mutton who wouldn’t know style if it tottered up to them on 10-inch heels.” While this comment stirred controversy, it highlighted his candid nature and evolving perspective on fashion in Ireland. As Irish women’s tastes matured over the years, Costelloe adapted his designs to reflect their preferences for practical yet stylish daywear.
The designer’s impact extended beyond haute couture; he was commissioned to create uniforms for the Irish Olympic team and Aer Lingus, showcasing his versatility. His expertise in tailoring allowed him to craft both sophisticated evening attire and intelligent casual wear, often utilizing linen woven in Northern Ireland. His collaboration with Strelitz Ltd, a linen manufacturer based in Dungannon, was instrumental in launching his brand.
Costelloe’s family life was as vibrant as his career. He married Anne Connor after meeting her in 1979, and together they raised seven children, many of whom became involved in the family business. He maintained residences in both Dublin and London, often commuting between the two.
His last collection, which premiered at the inaugural Irish Fashion Week in Dublin in October 2025, underscored his enduring commitment to fashion. Costelloe was a regular fixture at London Fashion Week for over four decades, solidifying his status in the industry.
In reflecting on his legacy, Paul Costelloe is remembered not only for his designs but also for his role in bringing Irish fashion to the global stage. His innate understanding of textiles, particularly linen, and his ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities made him a pivotal figure in the fashion world. Costelloe is survived by his wife, Anne, and their children, who will continue to uphold his legacy in the industry.
