Red Arrows Appoint Wing Commander Sasha Nash as First Female Leader
The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, known as the Red Arrows, has made history with the appointment of Wing Commander Sasha Nash as its first female leader. She succeeds Wing Commander Adam Collins, who completed a three-year tour in the role. This significant milestone marks a new chapter for the Red Arrows, which has long been a symbol of British aviation excellence.
In her new position, Nash commands a team of 150 personnel, comprising both air and ground crew. Expressing her gratitude for the opportunity, Nash stated, “I am incredibly proud and excited to now, as Officer Commanding RAFAT, be leading a team whose aim is to represent the UK and help inspire future generations of aviators from all backgrounds.” Her appointment is seen as a pivotal moment in the Royal Air Force, reflecting a commitment to diversity and inclusion within its ranks.
Nash’s Journey to Leadership
Nash’s aviation career began in 2005 when she joined the RAF. An accomplished fast-jet pilot, she has flown the Tornado GR4 on the frontline and during various exercises around the world. Her passion for aviation ignited at a young age, inspired by airshows and the thrill of aircraft displays. “I was a six-year-old little girl when I decided to join the Royal Air Force and to fly fast-jets,” she recalled. This childhood ambition fueled her academic pursuits, leading to a sixth form scholarship and a bursary for university to support her RAF aspirations.
Discussing her new role, Nash emphasized the importance of teamwork and excellence, stating, “This is a team of dedicated, diligent, and enthusiastic people, exemplifying the ethos and values found in units right across the RAF.” She aims to uphold the standards that the Red Arrows are globally renowned for as they prepare for the upcoming airshow season, with training already underway.
Acknowledging Her Predecessor
Nash paid tribute to her predecessor, Adam Collins, highlighting his commitment to both the team and the RAF. “I’ve worked alongside Adam over the last couple of years and witnessed, firsthand, his utter dedication to both the team and the RAF,” she said. Collins’ extensive knowledge of display flying and his respect within the wider aviation community have set a high standard for Nash’s leadership.
As the Red Arrows look ahead to an exciting season, Nash is eager to engage with the public at various airshows and events. She hopes to inspire young aviation enthusiasts and encourage a new generation from diverse backgrounds to consider careers in aviation.
Wing Commander Sasha Nash’s appointment not only marks a significant achievement for her personally but also represents a broader shift within the Royal Air Force towards greater representation and inclusivity in leadership roles.
