Newcastle Children’s Heart Unit Upgrades Clinic E for Young Patients

A significant refurbishment of Clinic E at the Freeman Hospital’s Children’s Heart Unit in Newcastle has been completed, promising to enhance the experience for young patients and their families. Funded by charitable contributions, the transformation aims to provide a more welcoming and calming environment for children undergoing cardiothoracic outpatient services.

The collaboration between the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (Chuf) and the Newcastle Hospitals Charity led to the creation of a space that features new artwork, vibrant child-friendly designs, and interactive screens in waiting areas. Additionally, smart televisions have been installed in the scanning rooms, designed to distract and relax young patients during their visits.

A focus group including hospital staff, patients, and families contributed insights on what enhancements would be most beneficial. The refurbishment also includes a sensory-friendly room, intentionally kept screen-free to assist children with additional needs.

Community Impact and Support

Feedback on the refurbishment has been overwhelmingly positive. Victoria Byrom, a mother whose son Finn benefited from Chuf’s support and who now works with the charity, expressed her appreciation for the changes. She described the new clinic environment as “amazing” and emphasized the importance of creating a comforting atmosphere for families during stressful times.

Charlotte Campbell, the director of fundraising and operations at Chuf, highlighted the emotional weight of the clinic for many families. She noted, “Clinic E is a place many families spend some of their most anxious moments. Creating a more welcoming space makes a real difference to how children and caregivers feel on the day.”

Similarly, Kelly Belmont, charity programmes and partnerships manager at Newcastle Hospitals Charity, praised the collaborative effort. She stated, “This project is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when charities and hospital teams work together. The improvements will make a real difference to the experience of families visiting the clinic for years to come.”
