Montenegro’s National Theatre Opens 72nd Season with Provocative Premiere
The 72nd season of the Crnogorsko narodno pozorište (Montenegro National Theatre) commenced with the premiere of the play “Tonight We Improvise,” directed by renowned European director Paolo Mađeli. This performance marks the first staging of Luigi Pirandello‘s work in Montenegro, reflecting the complexities of a dysfunctional family and a theatrical ensemble challenging their director.
“Tonight We Improvise” explores the blurred lines between reality and fiction, echoing the sentiment expressed by William Shakespeare that the world is a stage. Mađeli’s adaptation delves into themes of identity fluidity and the quest for truth in a contemporary context, addressing various social and familial anomalies prevalent today.
Cast Insights and Thematic Depth
Leading actress Ana Vujošević described the production as a significant deconstruction of theatrical norms, emphasizing its relevance to contemporary life. “If we managed to convey the anger and disappointment of living in such a reality, then that is a true success,” Vujošević stated. She highlighted the troubling transformation of society, suggesting that people have become increasingly ruthless and apathetic, leading to a sense of despair regarding civilization’s decline.
Actor Miloš Pejović praised Mađeli’s interpretation of Pirandello, stating it aligns closely with the playwright’s original intentions. Pejović characterized his role as challenging, noting the need to navigate multiple layers of character development. “We must understand that we are playing actors who are chosen based on their characteristics to portray specific roles,” he explained, indicating the complexity involved in the performance.
Creative Collaboration and Future Performances
Following the premiere, Mađeli acknowledged Pirandello’s significance in modern theatre, referring to him as one of the greatest writers of the last two centuries. “When directing this play, I adhered to certain guidelines he provided, allowing us to find treasure within his work,” said Mađeli.
Actor Simo Trebješanin, who portrays the director in the play, expressed satisfaction with how the production turned out, setting a high standard for craftsmanship and artistic quality. He noted that collaborating with Mađeli has been a unique opportunity for local actors, who seldom work with directors of such caliber. “He has a deep respect for actors and brings a family atmosphere to the stage,” Trebješanin remarked.
The ensemble cast also features Dejan Ivanić, Ana Vučković, Jelena Minić, and others, contributing to a rich tapestry of performances. The adaptation and dramaturgy were crafted by Željka Udovičić-Pleština, with costumes by Lina Leković and set design by Ivan Marušić Klif.
The show is scheduled for a repeat performance tonight at 20:00 on the Grand Stage, offering audiences another chance to experience this thought-provoking theatrical journey. Mađeli commended the talent of young actors in Montenegro, stating, “You have a good acting school here, unlike many other countries. It has been fantastic working with these young talents.”
As the season unfolds, the Crnogorsko narodno pozorište continues to embrace the challenges of contemporary theatre, engaging audiences with powerful narratives that reflect the complexities of modern life.
