Maryland Rejects Thousands of NSFW Vanity License Plates for 2025
The Maryland Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) has announced a significant crackdown on vanity license plates for 2025, rejecting thousands deemed “not safe for work” (NSFW). This move aims to uphold community standards and prevent the use of objectionable language on vehicles across the state.
The decision follows a review of submissions where the MVA identified numerous vanity plate requests containing inappropriate or offensive terms. While phrases like “YOMAMA,” “DRUNK,” and “LAMEZ” might not seem overtly offensive, the MVA took a broad approach to what constitutes objectionable content. The agency did not provide a detailed list of criteria, but it clearly leaned toward a “better safe than sorry” policy.
Criteria for Rejections
Notably, the MVA’s list of rejected terms included words associated with potty humor, with examples such as “TOILET,” “GOT2P00,” and “POOP” all being denied. Even seemingly benign phrases like “OLDFART” were excluded from approval. Additionally, a range of three-digit combinations, specifically those between 001 and 993, were also prohibited.
The agency took a strong stance against terms related to sexuality and sexual orientation. Common words such as “SEX,” “SEXY,” and “GAY,” which can also imply happiness, were not permitted. Requests that attempted to phonetically spell out profanity, particularly those starting with “F,” faced immediate rejection, further reflecting the MVA’s stringent guidelines.
Public Reaction and Transparency
The public response to the MVA’s rejections has been mixed. Some residents support the initiative, believing it maintains a level of decorum on public roads. Others argue that the agency’s criteria lack transparency, leaving many puzzled about what constitutes an NSFW term.
The complete list of rejected vanity plates is available on local news channels, including Baltimore’s FOX45 News. This transparency allows Maryland residents to better understand the boundaries set by the MVA and the reasoning behind the rejections.
Ultimately, the MVA’s actions underscore a broader cultural conversation about personal expression and public standards. With the automotive landscape being a canvas for creativity, the agency’s decision reflects a careful balance between individuality and community values in Maryland.
