Gary Meads, the landlord of the Coach & Horses Inn, has shared insights into his unique upbringing at the historic pub, which his family has operated since 1968. The inn, located on Weatheroak Hill in Alvechurch, near Birmingham, boasts a rich history dating back to 1787, with notable visitors including the famous author JRR Tolkien.

In a recent interview with BirminghamLive, Meads reflected on the joys and challenges of growing up in a pub environment. He expressed that life in the inn was “brilliant” and that having parents who ran a pub brought excitement to his childhood. “My friends loved the fact my parents owned a pub,” he said. “I was very good at giving away Vimto’s and crisps when I was younger.”

A Legacy of Passion and Community

Meads noted that living in a pub fostered his social skills, as he was always surrounded by patrons. “I didn’t have the opportunity to be introverted because I was always around people,” he explained. “The Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties were particularly brilliant and it was a magical time for me.”

The Coach & Horses Inn not only serves traditional ales and home-cooked meals but also represents a family legacy. Meads’ parents have dedicated over five decades to the establishment, with his father still actively involved at the age of 89. “My father still helps around and turns 89 in February,” Meads shared. “It’s his passion, love and his life.”

While the claim that Tolkien used to write by the bar remains unverified by the Tolkien Society, it adds to the pub’s allure. The stories and memories shared by patrons contribute to the inn’s identity as a cherished community hub.

As the Coach & Horses Inn continues to thrive under the stewardship of the Meads family, it encapsulates the spirit of community and tradition, drawing locals and visitors alike. With ongoing dedication to quality service and a welcoming atmosphere, Meads is committed to preserving the unique character of the pub for future generations.
