Keep Rodents Out This Winter: Quick Daily Task to Seal Your Home
As winter approaches, homes become inviting shelters for rodents like rats and mice. These pests often seek warmth indoors, and without proper precautions, homeowners could face a serious infestation. Fortunately, a simple 60-second daily task can significantly reduce the likelihood of rodents entering your home.
According to the British Pest Control Association, rodents only need a gap of 6mm—about the size of a pencil’s eraser—to gain access. Homeowners are advised to inspect their properties for potential entry points and seal any cracks or gaps. The association emphasizes that rodents are adept at squeezing through the smallest openings, making thorough checks essential.
Identifying Entry Points
Common areas where rodents might infiltrate include damaged sections around doors and windows. However, less obvious locations can also serve as entry points. Unsealed spots in skirting boards, gaps between the floor and walls, and even around fireplaces can provide access to these pests. Inspecting corners inside closets and spaces between pipes under sinks or washing machines is also crucial.
Experts recommend focusing on low-level gaps first since these are the most likely areas for mice to enter. Regularly checking these common nesting areas is a proactive way to prevent infestations. Homeowners should look for cracks near the floor and consider using wires wool to fill these holes.
Effective Sealing Techniques
Using wire wool, also known as steel wool, can be an effective method to deter rodents. Its tough material is difficult for rats and mice to bite through, and its flexibility allows it to fit into tiny holes. Once wire wool is in place, applying a sealant such as cement, caulk, or expanding foam can help create an airtight barrier, further enhancing protection against rodent entry.
Taking just a minute each day to inspect and seal your home can have a lasting impact on keeping rats and mice at bay throughout the winter months. By proactively addressing potential entry points, homeowners can enjoy a rodent-free environment, ensuring that their homes remain safe and comfortable during the colder season.
