Joey Dunlop Exhibition Celebrates Iconic Rider’s Legacy at TT
The legacy of renowned motorcycle racer Joey Dunlop is being honored at the Isle of Man TT with a dedicated exhibition. Open daily and free of charge at the Mercury Club, the exhibition features a collection of memorabilia, including Dunlop’s personal toolbox and the motorcycles he rode during his final races. This tribute will remain available to the public until the end of race week, highlighting the enduring impact of Dunlop, who passed away in 2000.
The exhibition officially opened on March 15, 2024, coinciding with the TT qualifying week. More than 100 attendees included riders, officials, and notable guests such as the Lieutenant Governor and Lady Philippa. Among the guests was John McGuinness MBE, a multiple TT winner and a close competitor of Dunlop. Reflecting on his experience, McGuinness remarked, “I can’t deny that I’ve found it quite emotional looking at some of the images and items in the exhibition. It’s amazing.”
Another significant contributor to the exhibition is Michael Dunlop MBE, who has recreated the Honda 1000cc SP1 that his uncle rode to victory in 2000. This machine is on display, alongside a fairing from the bike painted in Vimto colors, which was used in Dunlop’s final TT. McGuinness will participate in a tribute lap on the replica bike during the upcoming race events, further commemorating Dunlop’s legacy.
Many contemporary riders were present at the opening, including Eddie Laycock, Ian Lougher, and Dave Leach. From the modern racing era, Dean Harrison, Nathan Harrison, and Horst Saiger also attended, showcasing the wide-reaching influence Dunlop has had on the sport.
Former Isle of Man Minister for Fun, David Cretney, along with Peter Duke, both paid homage to Dunlop, acknowledging his status as one of the most successful and beloved road racers in history. The exhibition serves not only as a tribute but as a reminder of the camaraderie and respect within the motorcycle racing community.
As spectators and participants gear up for the races, the Joey Dunlop Exhibition stands as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of one of the sport’s legends, ensuring that his memory continues to inspire future generations.
