Great Barrington Welcomes New Graphic Novel Haven on Main Street
Drew Sanders opened the doors to his new and used comic and graphic novel store, Western Massachusetts Graphic Novels, on May 24, 2025, at 152 Main Street in Great Barrington. This establishment marks a significant addition to the local literary scene, reflecting the growing popularity of graphic novels and comics in recent years. Sanders, a lifelong comic book enthusiast, aims to provide a space for both children and adults to explore a diverse range of reading materials.
Sanders’ journey began in 2007 when he started selling children’s books in New York City. After years of consulting families on reading materials, he decided to return to his roots and open a bookstore in his hometown. “After managing the commercial property for several years, I decided to open up a bookstore for kids and adults specializing in trade paperbacks and series from Image and DC Comics, as well as independent graphic novels from major publishers,” he explains.
Curated Collections and Community Engagement
The store features an extensive collection of graphic novels, manga, and classic literature adapted into graphic formats. Sanders emphasizes the importance of illustrations in his selection process, stating, “I look first for the illustrations. If the writing is also good, I’ll buy it.” He has dedicated significant space to middle readers and preteens, including nonfiction, memoirs, and fiction titles from publishers like Harper Alley and Dark Horse.
In addition to traditional graphic novels, Western Massachusetts Graphic Novels also stocks rare used books, puzzles, board games, and card decks. Notably, the store includes a growing section of manga, an area Sanders predicts will expand further in the coming years. He notes, “Parents and families often remember a special book they read in their formative years but can no longer find—until they come here.”
The store is not just a retail space but a community hub. Sanders is committed to making books accessible to everyone, stating, “Not everyone is affluent, so I donate to camps and youth programs.” He aims to create an environment where children can discover literature that resonates with them, fostering a love for reading.
Transformative Power of Graphic Novels
Sanders believes graphic novels offer unique benefits for young readers. They can help adolescents explore complex subjects in a more engaging way, often leading to increased empathy and understanding. He reflects on his own experiences with reading in school, saying, “Reading became a boring, repetitive task aimed at memorizing details, passing a test, and competing with peers.” In contrast, he emphasizes that graphic novels present an opportunity for personal growth and development.
Research supports Sanders’ views on the positive impact of graphic novels. A 2023 survey by the National Literacy Trust found that children who read graphic novels for pleasure were nearly twice as likely to enjoy reading overall compared to those who did not engage with the format. The appealing visual layout and concise text help to break down barriers, making reading less daunting and more enjoyable for young audiences.
Sanders’ passion for graphic literature is evident in his approach to curating his collection. He aims to showcase titles that inspire and resonate with readers, hoping to motivate them to share their own stories. “Kids need to see examples of people they can relate to, characters that inspire them,” he states.
As the graphic novel industry continues to thrive, Sanders foresees significant growth in the sector. “We’re in the platinum age of comics… Criminal comics are often made into movies or TV series. It’s big business,” he explains. The landscape of comics has evolved dramatically, with many creators now achieving celebrity status and their works being adapted for various media.
Through Western Massachusetts Graphic Novels, Sanders is not merely selling books; he is cultivating a community focused on lifelong learning and the joy of reading. The store is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For updates on new arrivals and events, customers can follow the store’s Instagram account.
