Gordon Ramsay Joins Forces with Feeding Britain to Combat Hunger
World-renowned chef and television personality Gordon Ramsay has partnered with the Newcastle-based charity Feeding Britain to address the pressing issue of hunger in the United Kingdom. This collaboration aims to provide vital support to families facing food insecurity, particularly during school holidays.
Founded in 2015, Feeding Britain has developed three primary programs to combat hunger. The charity operates a network of 430 Affordable Food Clubs that serve over 100,000 households. In addition, the Healthy Holidays initiative aims to create at least 60,000 spots for children experiencing poverty, offering meals and engaging activities at 150 clubs during the 2026 school holidays. The Pathways From Poverty program provides intensive support within food banks and Affordable Food Clubs, helping families increase their incomes while addressing underlying issues such as housing and debt.
Recent statistics indicate that approximately 10% of UK households experience food insecurity, a figure that rises to 16% for households with children. This alarming trend concerns Ramsay, who became aware of the challenges surrounding ‘holiday hunger’ and the lack of support for children in poverty during school breaks.
Following months of discussions and a visit to the London Food Bus project in South London, Ramsay’s partnership with Feeding Britain was solidified. He was accompanied by Andrew Forsey, Feeding Britain’s National Director, and Professor Greta Defeyter, a charity trustee and Dean of Social Policy Engagement at Northumbria University. Professor Defeyter, a leading researcher on the benefits of school meals and holiday programs, expressed her enthusiasm about Ramsay’s involvement.
“I am delighted that Gordon is working with Feeding Britain to increase the number of children and young people able to access support during school holidays,” said Professor Defeyter. “He fully understands the need for stigma-free meals, both in primary and secondary schools, and also during the school holidays where clubs provide children and young people with meals alongside opportunities to engage in enriching activities.”
Ramsay is committed to amplifying the charity’s mission and raising awareness about the challenges families face when accessing food. Reflecting on his own childhood, he stated, “I remember vividly what it was like growing up in a household with very little money. It’s painful to reflect on the fact that so many children growing up today are living with that same constant fear of being hungry, particularly in the school holidays.”
He emphasized the importance of Feeding Britain’s work, noting, “Feeding Britain is doing something really special and powerful to help those children, and that’s why I’m delighted to support the charity’s vital work with personal financial support from myself and Tana, as well as raising awareness of childhood food poverty.”
The focus of Ramsay’s efforts will be on the charity’s school holiday programs, which aim to create a minimum of 60,000 places for children in need. Already, 730,000 children have benefited from the Holiday Activities and Food programs, with 75% of participants reporting an increase in their consumption of fruits and vegetables as a result of their involvement.
Andrew Forsey expressed gratitude for Ramsay’s support, stating, “Gordon’s support for Feeding Britain will transform the work of our charity. The cruel reality is that all too many families are struggling to put food on the table, but with Gordon’s help we can put this right. His passion for the cause is palpable.”
This partnership not only aims to alleviate hunger but also seeks to create a more supportive environment for children during the school holidays, when the need is particularly acute. Through this collaboration, Ramsay and Feeding Britain hope to foster a future where no child has to experience the fear of hunger.
