Five New Flats Proposed for Historic Brownhills Chapel Garden
A planning application has been submitted to Walsall Council for the construction of five new flats on the garden space of the historic United House, a former chapel and schoolhouse in Brownhills. The proposed development aims to transform the green area adjacent to United House, located on Coppice Lane, into a three-storey residential building.
If the application is approved, the project, led by applicant Azid Gungah, will feature two single-bedroom flats on both the ground and first floors, with a total of one flat on the third floor. The design includes provisions for parking, a bin storage area, and bicycle storage. Future tenants will also have access to a communal garden space.
Design Considerations and Environmental Impact
The site, currently an open plot with low vegetation and a mix of trees, contains no existing built structures. Gungah has emphasized that the new property is intended to be “subservient” to United House, ensuring it does not obscure the historic building. The plans propose vehicular access from an existing service road off Chester Road North, which will lead to five parking bays, four of which will include electric vehicle charging stations.
Gungah highlighted the importance of balancing housing needs with the preservation of the area’s historic environment. He stated, “The proposed development balances the need for new housing with the imperative to protect and enhance the historic environment.” He added that the design respects the setting of United House, mitigates potential environmental impacts, and addresses technical site constraints.
Significance of United House
United House, recognized as a Locally Listed building, dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its architectural and historical importance has made it a notable landmark in Brownhills. The planned development aims to complement the character of the area while providing much-needed residential options.
Gungah believes that the project represents a sustainable and high-quality development that aligns with local planning policies. “It will make a positive contribution to the character of Brownhills,” he asserted, indicating a commitment to enhancing the community while addressing housing demands.
As the application proceeds through the planning process, residents and stakeholders will have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the proposed development, which could reshape the landscape of this historic area.
