Experts Propose Innovative Wastewater Solutions for Podgorica
The treatment of sanitary wastewater in Podgorica has become a pressing issue, prompting calls for a modernized approach to address the city’s environmental challenges. Experts assert that the solution is not only feasible but also straightforward, contingent on differentiating between a collector system and a treatment system.
According to former Minister of Ecology and water quality hydrogeologist, D. Mijatovic, the proposed treatment system should be state-of-the-art, ensuring safe and effective wastewater management. He emphasized that the location of the facility, whether inside or outside the city, becomes insignificant when a perfect treatment system is in place.
Mijatovic outlined essential features for the proposed system, including hermetic sealing of digesters and tanks, effective gas filtration, and optimal water purification parameters. He expressed frustration that these recommendations, first suggested in an article dated September 23, 2025, have not yet been implemented, leading to what he refers to as an “unnecessary circus.”
Call for Expert Collaboration
While Mijatovic does not claim to be a technology expert, he has extensive experience in environmental protection and has contributed to numerous domestic and international projects. He was part of a team that conducted significant environmental assessments in Zetska ravnica, which provided a foundation for understanding the necessary steps forward.
He advocates for the inclusion of specialized experts in wastewater treatment systems to expedite a viable solution. Recently, a group of professionals from Belgrade and other renowned international centers visited the area and confirmed that the treatment system could be redesigned and upgraded to enhance safety. They also highlighted the importance of separating stormwater from wastewater systems, which is a critical element of the overall project.
Mijatovic expressed his concern over the ongoing chaos surrounding the wastewater management debate, noting that instead of valuing expert input, local authorities have often disregarded their advice. He pointed out that misinformation about the Mareza water source, which has been affected by pollution downstream, exemplifies a troubling trend in environmental management.
Urgent Need for Competent Oversight
Mijatovic argues that allowing uninformed individuals to dictate policies on such crucial matters poses a significant risk. He warns that the current situation may even border on organized ecological crime if not addressed properly. The need for qualified professionals to oversee these projects is paramount, as their expertise can guarantee the safety and effectiveness of any proposed solutions.
He insists that all stakeholders, from project managers to media figures, must be held accountable for the current state of affairs. Mijatovic emphasizes the necessity of rigorous standards for those involved, stating that they should be barred from participating in projects if they lack the requisite knowledge.
The expert community has already proposed a concept that suggests refining the existing project, including segmentation and enhanced safety measures. Mijatovic urges that these specialists should not shy away from critiquing all participants responsible for the chaotic situation.
He concludes with a strong message: “Allow experts to redesign the wastewater treatment system so we can establish the safest and most effective solution available. Once this is achieved, the relevance of location as an environmental factor will diminish.”
This call to action highlights the urgent need for a collaborative and informed approach to tackle the wastewater management challenges facing Podgorica, ensuring both environmental safety and public health are prioritized.
