Budućnost Volley Gears Up for European Challenge Against Maribor
Budućnost Volley is set to return to the European stage after a seven-year absence, facing Slovenian team Maribor in the first round of the CEV Challenge Cup. The matches will take place on March 6 and 7, 2024, at the “Verde” hall in Podgorica, starting at 18:00 local time.
Coach Dejan Radić expressed his hopes for the team to replicate their strong performance from last week, where they defeated Maribor 3-0 in the MEVZA League. “Since becoming the coach of Budućnost, one of my goals has been to bring the team back to Europe, as I believe it is essential for our development,” Radić stated. He emphasized the importance of European competitions for demonstrating the club’s ambition and commitment to high-level play.
The team is entering this matchup in good form. Budućnost recently competed in a tournament in Budva, where they achieved a mixed bag of results. In addition to their victory over Maribor, they suffered a narrow defeat to Hungarian team MAV Elore, losing 3-2 despite leading 2-0 and having two match points in the third set. However, they also secured a win against Budva with a score of 3-1, currently placing them at the top of the MEVZA League standings.
As Radić noted, the upcoming games against Maribor come after the team demonstrated excellent performance at the recent MEVZA tournament. “We played very well, and I am satisfied with the results. We showed we can compete with Maribor, but now we face them in a new competition where they will be stronger,” he explained. Radić also pointed out that Maribor was missing a key player, a Cuban international, during their previous encounter, which could change the dynamics of the upcoming matches.
The team is prepared both physically and mentally, with Radić hoping for a repeat of last week’s success. The winner of this two-match series will advance to face Częstochowa, the fourth-placed team from Poland’s PlusLiga, known as one of the strongest leagues in Europe.
Budućnost’s return to European volleyball is significant, marking a new chapter for the club and its supporters. The matches against Maribor not only represent a challenge but also an opportunity for the team to showcase their growth and ambition on a larger stage.
