An Army veteran from Trevor, Llangollen, expressed his deep honour after representing his regiment during the Cenotaph Parade in London on Remembrance Sunday. Mark Jones, who served for 18 years and reached the rank of Colour Sergeant, participated in the event on November 9, 2023, as a representative of the 1st Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers.

Mark, now living in Ruabon, was selected for the parade through a ballot organized by the Royal British Legion. The Cenotaph Parade, held in Whitehall, featured around 10,000 veterans and eligible participants marching past the memorial following the National Act of Remembrance, led by HM The King. This annual event honours those who have served and sacrificed their lives, including British and Commonwealth soldiers, sailors, airmen, and emergency service personnel.

Reflecting on his selection and the experience, Mark stated, “I am truly honoured and privileged to have taken part in this year’s Remembrance Parade. It’s a profound opportunity to pay my respects to those who have served and sacrificed for our freedom. Being a part of this commemoration reminds me of the courage, dedication and selflessness shown by so many, and I am grateful for a small role in ensuring that their legacy is never forgotten.”

Mark’s military career included active service in Bosnia, Iraq, Kosovo, Cyprus, and Northern Ireland, along with training in Canada and Kenya. He also served as an instructor at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick. Now aged 50, Mark is pursuing a degree in Human Geography at the University of Chester.

His decision to study this subject stems from his military experiences. “During my time on operational service in the military, I found that I have a profound interest in the complex interactions between people, places and the environment, and also their social and economic issues. This is an opportunity to formalise my life experiences into a degree,” he explained.

The Cenotaph Parade is part of a nationwide observance of Remembrance Sunday, which falls on the Sunday nearest to Armistice Day on November 11. This day commemorates the end of World War One in 1918 and serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals in the name of freedom.

Mark’s participation not only highlights his personal journey but also underscores the enduring significance of Remembrance Sunday in fostering collective memory and respect for those who have served in the armed forces.
