A guest on the popular television series Antiques Roadshow was left astonished when the value of a pair of historic soup bowls was revealed during the show’s latest episode, aired on January 11, 2024. The bowls, associated with the first major Scottish expedition to the Antarctic, were appraised at an impressive value, highlighting their significance and rarity.

Historic Significance of the Soup Bowls

This week’s episode took place at Pitzhanger Manor in Ealing, west London. The setting featured a variety of intriguing artifacts, including an 18th-century children’s flip book, a collection of vintage trainers, and a flying helmet from the Battle of Britain. Notably, the guest brought a painting of Antarctica, created by Edward Wilson, which depicted the Checkpoint on McMurdo Sound. This painting was a family heirloom, passed down from the guest’s grandfather, Reginald Skelton, who participated in the Antarctic expedition from 1901 to 1904.

Alongside the painting, the guest presented the pair of soup bowls, which were produced by Royal Doulton. Expert appraiser Fuschia Voremberg remarked on the unique charm of the bowls, stating, “These soup bowls are so fun, and they’re actually made by Royal Doulton as you can see on the crest on the back.” She explained that these bowls were used by the expedition’s officers during their meals, enhancing their historical value.

Shocking Appraisal Leaves Guest Speechless

The discussion shifted back to the painting, with Voremberg praising its vibrant colors and the guest sharing her own experience visiting Antarctica in November. She noted how the painting beautifully captured the “beautiful tones of blue” found in the landscape. However, the moment of revelation came during the valuation of the soup bowls.

“These soup bowls are £3,500 each. I’d give you £7,000 for the painting. That makes a total value of £14,000, how do you feel about that?”

Upon hearing the total valuation of £14,000, the guest expressed her surprise, stating, “I’m a little bit astonished, quite honestly. I’ve never really thought about the value of it. We’d certainly never sell them; they’re just a part of our family.” This sentiment underscores the emotional connection many guests have with their family heirlooms, which often hold both sentimental and financial value.
