Alan Carr Acquires Historic Ayton Castle for £3.25 Million
Comedian Alan Carr has made headlines with his recent purchase of Ayton Castle in the Scottish Borders for over £3.25 million. This acquisition marks a significant investment in property, particularly given the castle’s status as a notable example of Gothic Revival architecture. Carr, known for his victory on the reality show The Celebrity Traitors, is set to transform this historic estate into a functional home, with plans for a new television series documenting the process.
Ayton Castle, which is widely regarded as one of Scotland’s finest historic houses, boasts a dramatic five-storey Great Tower and intricate stonework. According to Knight Frank, the estate agents responsible for marketing the property, the sale was confirmed following a successful closing date, although they did not disclose the buyer’s identity as a matter of policy. Edward Douglas-Home, director and head of residential sales at Knight Frank, praised the castle’s architectural significance.
Features of Ayton Castle and Surrounding Estate
The estate spans over 160 acres of listed gardens and parkland, providing a unique blend of privacy and scale. In addition to the castle, the property includes several cottages and lodges, which could potentially generate rental income. Douglas-Home highlighted the remarkable combination of architectural importance and serene surroundings, stating, “Ayton Castle is a truly extraordinary property.”
Carr’s decision to invest in a castle rather than a more conventional family home reflects a personal journey, as he approaches his 50th birthday. He humorously noted, “Some men when they have a midlife crisis buy a Lamborghini or grow a ponytail, but me – I want my very own castle.”
The purchase is not just a personal endeavor; it will also be the subject of a new television series titled “Castle Man.” Produced by the team behind popular shows like Clarkson’s Farm and Alma’s Not Normal, the program will capture Carr’s efforts to adapt the estate into a livable space. While filming is already underway, the release date for the series remains unconfirmed.
As Carr embarks on this new chapter, the transformation of Ayton Castle promises to be an engaging journey for both the comedian and his audience. With its historical significance and Carr’s unique vision, the castle is poised to become a focal point of interest in the entertainment and property worlds.
