A 26-year-old woman from Sittingbourne has shared her harrowing journey with breast cancer, revealing her struggle with a terminal diagnosis that has forced her to confront her mortality. Shanice Bennett was first diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in May 2023 at the age of 23, after a lump prompted her to seek medical attention. Initially dismissed by her general practitioner as too young for such a diagnosis, she later insisted on further evaluation due to her family history of breast cancer.

After undergoing a rigorous treatment regimen that included chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and a mastectomy with lymph node removal, Bennett was declared in remission by March 2024. However, her relief was short-lived. She began experiencing severe back pain, which she initially attributed to fatigue. Eventually, her condition worsened to the point where she could not get out of bed, prompting a visit to the emergency room.

In a devastating turn of events, she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, now classified as metastatic, meaning it has spread to her bones, lungs, and liver. This diagnosis has drastically limited her treatment options, leaving her facing a grim prognosis.

“I was really shocked as I thought I’d just slipped a disc,” Bennett recalled. The unexpected news left her grappling with her future. “I know a lot of people worry that it will come back after treatment, but I thought I’d be fine,” she explained.

As she navigates this challenging journey, Bennett has embraced a positive outlook and is determined to make the most of her time. She has initiated a bucket list, aiming to complete as many personal goals as possible. So far, she has taken her seven-year-old nephew to Disneyland Paris, visited New York, and celebrated her mother’s wedding in Cyprus, even joining the honeymoon.

Documenting Her Journey

Bennett has gained a following of over 22,000 on TikTok, where she documents her experiences and shares her bucket list aspirations. Among her goals is attending a special screening of the upcoming film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, scheduled for release on November 20, 2024. She hopes to secure an advanced viewing or a visit to the film set, and her video appealing to the film studio, Lionsgate, has attracted nearly 400,000 views.

To support her aspirations, Bennett has set up a GoFundMe page aimed at raising funds for her bucket list adventures. In her appeal, she wrote,

“I am currently on my second line of treatment. Once this treatment stops working, there aren’t many good options left for me that will continue to allow me to live my best possible life.”

Any remaining funds are intended to assist with end-of-life costs and will also benefit Macmillan Cancer Support.

The emotional weight of her diagnosis has highlighted the urgent need for increased awareness and early detection of breast cancer. A recent petition advocating for the lowering of the age for women’s mammograms to 40 years, with screenings to occur annually, has gathered over 15,000 signatures. Currently, mammograms are offered every three years to women aged 50 to 70. If the petition gains enough support, it could prompt a parliamentary debate.

Chemotherapy nurse Gemma Reeves emphasized the importance of early detection, stating,

“Early detection makes a huge difference, and when breast cancer is found sooner, treatments can be less aggressive. Outcomes are better.”

Bennett’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the realities faced by young cancer patients and underscores the need for more accessible screening options. As she continues to pursue her bucket list, her resilience and determination shine through, inspiring many as she shares her journey with the world.
