Young Entrepreneur Overcomes Health Challenge to Inspire Others
A young man from Cardiff, Jaydon, is transforming his life after spending over a year in hospital battling an incurable bowel disease. Diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at the age of 12, Jaydon experienced debilitating symptoms that included severe diarrhoea, intense bone pain, and extreme fatigue. Now 20, he has turned his experiences into motivation, launching his own successful car detailing and valeting business while preparing for a significant physical challenge.
Jaydon’s journey has not been easy. As a child, he was an enthusiastic rugby and football player, but his health issues led to extensive absences from school. He recalls, “It massively impacted my childhood. I missed out on school and dealt with so many symptoms for ages that just made me feel really unwell.” His hospitalisation lasted more than a year as doctors worked to determine the cause of his symptoms.
Despite ongoing flare-ups and additional hospital visits during his teenage years, Jaydon is now able to manage his health while running his business in Cardiff. He noted, “I’m now lucky to do a job that means I can be flexible and work around my health, but of course that also means I miss out when I’m going through a flare-up and am unable to work.”
Living with Crohn’s disease continues to present challenges for Jaydon. He faces both physical and mental hurdles, including concerns about toilet access and persistent joint pain. Currently, he is on the waiting list for stoma surgery, a procedure that creates an artificial opening in the abdomen to divert waste into a collection bag. According to Crohn’s and Colitis UK, approximately one in five individuals with Crohn’s undergo this surgery within five years of their diagnosis, often leading to improved quality of life.
Taking on New Challenges
In January 2024, Jaydon will embark on a remarkable challenge as part of Crohn’s & Colitis UK’s Big Winter Workout campaign. He plans to run 5 kilometres every day for 31 days, amounting to nearly six marathons, or a total of 155 miles. Jaydon expressed his determination, stating, “I’m finally feeling healthier but still want to get fitter, so Crohn’s & Colitis UK’s Big Winter Workout challenge felt like a great fit.”
His motivation extends beyond personal fitness; Jaydon aims to raise funds for the charity and increase awareness about Crohn’s disease. “I really want to raise money for the charity as I still think there’s a lot of misunderstanding about what Crohn’s is and just how serious it can be, and I want to raise awareness about that,” he added.
Understanding Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s disease is a long-term condition that leads to inflammation of the gut, with symptoms that can vary significantly over time. Flare-ups can last anywhere from a few days to several months, impacting daily life and overall health. The NHS describes the condition as challenging, highlighting the need for support and understanding from the public.
Jaydon’s story exemplifies resilience and determination in the face of adversity. As he prepares for his upcoming challenge, he hopes to inspire others living with chronic illnesses to stay active and advocate for better awareness and understanding of their conditions.
