Urgent Recall of Aptamil Baby Formula Due to Toxin Contamination
An urgent recall has been issued for a specific batch of **Aptamil** baby formula due to contamination with a harmful toxin. The **Food Standards Agency (FSA)** confirmed on Friday that the product may pose serious health risks, including food poisoning symptoms such as vomiting and stomach cramps.
The affected product is **Aptamil First Infant Formula (800g)**, with the batch number **31-10-2026** and a best-before date of **31 October 2026**. The recall specifically applies to this batch sold in the **United Kingdom**, although other batches in different countries may also be impacted.
Health Risks and Recommendations
Darren Whitby, head of incidents and resilience at the FSA, emphasized the importance of this recall. “We want to make parents, guardians, and caregivers aware that **Danone** has recalled a batch of **Aptamil First Infant Formula (800g)**. If you have purchased batch **31-10-2026**, the FSA advises that you should not feed infants or young children with this product,” he stated.
The toxin in question, **cereulide**, is produced by the bacteria **Bacillus cereus**, which can lead to rapid onset food poisoning symptoms. Whitby further advised parents: “If you have fed this product to a baby and have any concerns about potential health impacts, you should seek advice from healthcare professionals by contacting your GP or calling **NHS 111**.”
The NHS and **Department of Health and Social Care** recommend switching to a different formula if necessary. For those who have received a prescription, consulting with a GP or health visitor is encouraged.
Further Information and Actions
For additional details, consumers are urged to check the full list of affected products and batch codes available on the FSA’s website. Danone has taken the precautionary step of recalling the product to ensure the safety and health of infants who may have consumed the formula.
This recall highlights the need for vigilance when it comes to food safety, particularly with products intended for vulnerable populations such as infants. The FSA is working closely with Danone to manage the situation and ensure that all necessary measures are taken to protect consumers.
As this situation develops, the FSA and Danone will provide updates to the public, ensuring that anyone affected by this recall is kept informed about the risks and the appropriate steps to take.
