Two More Deaths Linked to Listeria Outbreak in Pasta Meals
A deadly outbreak of listeria linked to ready-made pasta meals has resulted in two additional fatalities and seven more illnesses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This brings the total count to 27 reported illnesses, including 25 hospitalizations and six deaths across 18 states, as of October 31, 2025.
The affected meals were sold at major grocery chains, including Kroger and Trader Joe’s. The pasta involved, supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods LLC based in Roseville, California, includes various types such as linguine and fettuccine. Laboratory tests confirmed that the pasta was contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, a pathogen particularly harmful to pregnant women and older adults.
The pasta products were distributed to several well-known producers of ready-to-eat meals, including Scott & Jon’s Shrimp Scampi and Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo. Following the contamination discovery, Nate’s Fine Foods initiated a recall of more than 245,000 pounds of pasta in September 2025.
Details of the Outbreak
The CDC has reported that the initial patient tied to this outbreak was identified in August 2024. However, it was not until September 2025 that investigators established a link between the illnesses and the pasta from Nate’s Fine Foods. Genetic testing revealed a match between the strain of listeria found in patients and the pasta, confirming its role in the outbreak.
The recent fatalities were reported in both Hawaii and Oregon, but further details about the individuals involved, such as their ages or health conditions, have not been disclosed. The patients affected by the outbreak have an average age of 74 years, with a range from four to 92 years old. Notably, more than two-thirds of the patients are female, and approximately three-quarters identify as white.
Experts are investigating the source of contamination, suggesting that unsanitized machinery in the production facility might have contributed to the outbreak. The CDC anticipates that there may be additional undetected cases linked to this outbreak.
Impact and Response
In response to the outbreak, several national grocery chains, including Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons, have recalled numerous products containing the contaminated pasta. Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and freezers for these recalled items and to return them to stores for a full refund. A comprehensive list of affected products can be accessed on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.
A representative from Nate’s Fine Foods expressed their commitment to consumer safety, stating, “Our top priority is ensuring the safety of the people who enjoy our products.” They also emphasized their dedication to transparency as the situation unfolds.
Listeria infections affect approximately 1,250 people in the United States each year, with about 1,000 hospitalizations and around 170 deaths attributed to the disease annually. Listeriosis, the illness caused by listeria, poses a significant risk, especially to vulnerable populations such as young children and the elderly. For pregnant women, listeria can lead to severe complications, including stillbirth or miscarriage.
As investigations continue, health authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and informed about food safety, particularly regarding ready-made meals.
