Tory Peer Receives Cutting-Edge Prostate Treatment on NHS
Conservative peer Sir Graham Brady has announced that he has been successfully treated for prostate cancer through the National Health Service (NHS). The former chairman of the 1922 Committee shared that he had been living with the disease for two years and expressed gratitude for receiving the same advanced therapy as former Prime Minister David Cameron, who opted for the treatment privately.
Brady, aged 58, has now joined a campaign supported by the Mail on Sunday, which advocates for a national prostate cancer screening program. The initiative aims to prevent avoidable deaths by facilitating earlier cancer detection. He is also promoting broader access to the focal therapy he received, which has fewer side effects compared to conventional surgical and radiotherapy options.
Brady’s cancer was identified through routine PSA blood tests, which assess the risk of prostate cancer. Following two MRI scans and two biopsies, his consultant at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London confirmed the presence of a small, slow-growing tumor. Initially, it was recommended that the tumor be monitored. However, Brady chose to undergo immediate treatment using focal therapy, which employs high-intensity ultrasound or electrical pulses to target and destroy the tumor while preserving healthy tissue.
He received his treatment on December 18, 2025, at Charing Cross Hospital in London, and was able to return home the same day. Brady hopes that this treatment will help him avoid more invasive procedures in the future. He stated, “I have been very lucky, but thousands of men each year would be suitable for this kind of treatment and I want them to get it. You can do this in a day and the likelihood of a good outcome is very high. It just seems crazy that so many men are expected to wait.”
According to the charity Prost8, approximately 17,000 men annually could benefit from focal therapy, yet fewer than 700 receive this option through the NHS, which is available at only seven hospitals in London and the South East.
Former Prime Minister David Cameron disclosed last year that he had successfully undergone treatment for prostate cancer using the same technique. It is understood that he received his treatment privately, with costs estimated at around £16,000.
The discussion surrounding prostate cancer treatment options continues to gain traction, as both Brady and Cameron emphasize the importance of accessible healthcare solutions for men facing similar diagnoses.
