Northern Trust Urges Funding for £143 Million Mental Health Facility
Plans for a new mental health facility in Antrim, estimated at £143 million, are currently stalled due to a lack of confirmed funding from the Department of Health. The Northern Trust, responsible for mental health services in the area, has emphasized the urgency of securing financial support to move forward with the Birch Hill Mental Health Centre project.
During a recent meeting of the Northern Health and Social Care Trust board at Antrim Hospital, Dr. Petra Corr, the divisional director of mental health, learning disability, and community wellbeing, expressed concerns about the budget situation. “There is a budget context of concern for us,” she stated. The Trust has also requested preliminary “enabling works” to be conducted on-site to prepare for construction once funding is secured.
Dr. Corr noted that the minister has shown support for the mental health initiative, urging that this support translate into actionable commitments.
Project Details and Timeline
The Birch Hill Mental Health Centre project received planning permission from the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in June 2023. Originally slated for completion by late 2028, the facility is designed to replace the existing Holywell Hospital and the Ross Thomson Unit located at Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.
The new facility will feature 134 beds across various treatment wards, as well as dedicated spaces for staff, visitors, and operational management. Plans include en-suite rooms with direct access to secure outdoor areas, which aim to enhance patient recovery through connections to nature and views of the surrounding countryside. The design prioritizes a therapeutic environment that supports both mental and physical well-being.
As of now, no decisions have been made regarding the future use of the Holywell Hospital premises, which currently houses approximately 400 staff members and is a listed building requiring ongoing maintenance. Holywell Hospital, established in 1898, was originally built to accommodate up to 1,000 patients and has served the community for over a century.
The Northern Trust’s efforts to advance the Birch Hill project highlight the growing need for modern mental health facilities that meet current standards and patient needs. With ongoing discussions and the minister’s commitment, the hope remains that funding will be secured to bring this critical initiative to fruition.
