Plans have been submitted for a new medical centre in Peterborough, aimed at accommodating a growing patient population. The existing Hampton Medical Centre, currently located in the Serpentine Green shopping centre, is increasingly unable to meet the demands of its 12,400 patients. A planning application was filed with Peterborough City Council on October 2, 2023, proposing a purpose-built facility at Silver Hill that could serve up to 15,000 patients.

The planning documents detail that the practice intends to expand its clinical staff to address rising demand. The new facility aims to provide additional appointments and a broader range of services. It will be constructed in two phases. The first phase will include the medical centre, parking, landscaping, and necessary infrastructure. Phase two will introduce residential accommodation specifically for medical students training with the practice.

The proposed medical centre will feature a two-storey, flat-roofed building encompassing 2,100 square meters of medical facilities, alongside 245 square meters of residential accommodation, which will consist of six self-contained student studios. A statement from the planning documents emphasizes the potential benefits of the development:

“The development as a whole, and at each stage, will provide a purpose-built, multidisciplinary medical facility for Hampton, improving patient outcomes, integrating and streamlining services, enhancing efficiencies, providing training opportunities and improving overall patient experience resulting in a highly innovative model of care for local residents.”

The new medical centre is strategically located to serve the population of Hampton while being in proximity to other essential services. It is also expected to create 40 full-time equivalent jobs and will feature 44 parking spaces designated for staff, patients, and visitors.

City council planners will review the proposal and make a formal decision at a later date. The new facility promises to enhance healthcare delivery in the region, reflecting a commitment to the growing needs of the community.
