Mobile Cervical Screening Unit Launches in Birmingham to Enhance Access

A new initiative has been launched to increase cervical cancer screening among women in Birmingham and Solihull. A mobile cervical screening unit will be stationed at various community locations, aimed at improving access to vital cancer prevention services. This service is available to women registered with any GP practice in the Birmingham and Solihull areas.

The pilot program began in December 2023, with approximately 60 women screened to date. The timing coincides with the national Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, which runs from January 19 to 25, 2024. The goal of this initiative is to take screening services directly into neighborhoods, making them more accessible and convenient for women.

Enhancing Women’s Health Services

Sally Roberts, Chief Nurse and Clinical & Quality Officer at NHS Birmingham, Black Country and Solihull, expressed enthusiasm about the pilot. “This pilot is a really exciting example of how we are transforming services to work better for women,” she said. She emphasized the importance of making cervical screening simpler, more flexible, and inclusive, aligning with the ambitions of the national 10 Year Health Plan to focus on preventive health care.

Cervical screening is recommended for women aged 25 to 64 every five years. While it is not a test for cancer, it plays a critical role in identifying early cell changes in the cervix that can be monitored or treated before developing into serious health issues. This proactive approach aims to catch potential problems early, significantly reducing the risk of cervical cancer.

Mobile Unit Schedule and Accessibility

The mobile cervical screening unit will operate from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at several locations throughout Birmingham. The schedule is as follows:

– **January 20, 2024**: Wing Yip Supermarket, 325 Nechells Park Road, Birmingham, B7 5NT
– **January 22, 2024**: Highgate Medical Centre, St Patrick’s Community Centre for Health, Frank Street, Birmingham, B12 0YA
– **January 27, 2024**: Southside Enterprise, 249 Ladypool Road, Birmingham, B12 8LF
– **January 29, 2024**: Saheli Hub, Balsall Heath Calthorpe Wellbeing Hub, 257 Edward Road, Balsall Heath, Birmingham, B12 9LF
– **February 3, 2024**: WM Legacy Centre, Soho House, Handsworth, B18 5LB

Additionally, as part of the women’s health program with Sparkbrook Children’s Zone, the mobile unit will be available every Thursday outside Highgate Medical Centre.

Invitations for cervical screening are now primarily distributed through the NHS App. For those without access to the app, traditional letters will be sent. Test results, including negative outcomes, are also communicated via the app, keeping individuals informed and engaged with their health.

This initiative marks a significant step towards improving women’s health services in Birmingham and Solihull, ensuring that cancer screening is both accessible and effective.
