Infrared Pilates Studio YOURS Launches in the UK: A Class Review

The popular infrared Pilates studio YOURS has officially opened its doors in Hackney Wick, London, marking a new chapter in the UK fitness landscape. This studio, already well-known for its innovative classes in Spain, aims to bring the benefits of infrared heat to Pilates enthusiasts in the city.
In recent years, heated workouts have surged in popularity, with infrared saunas and thermal therapies becoming widely accepted as beneficial for health and recovery. A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings in 2018 highlights that heat exposure may support cardiovascular health, reduce inflammation, and enhance endurance and recovery. As a result, many fitness enthusiasts are now seeking out classes that offer these advantages.
Infrared Pilates distinguishes itself from traditional hot yoga and Pilates by utilizing infrared panels to heat the body directly, as opposed to merely warming the air. According to Jenna Armitage, founder of GoodGood Yoga, this method allows for a more effective workout by raising the body’s temperature from within, thus enhancing muscle activation and recovery.
Classes at YOURS are held at temperatures between 35°C and 38°C and incorporate both classical and contemporary Pilates movements, often using props like light weights and Pilates rings. Jess Fraser, an instructor at YOURS, emphasizes that the infrared heat penetrates deeply into muscles and joints, which can improve flexibility and reduce the risk of injury.
The benefits of infrared Pilates extend beyond physical improvements. Participants often report enhanced skin appearance due to increased circulation, expedited recovery from workouts, and a calming effect on the nervous system. The combination of low-impact exercise with added heat may also help balance cortisol levels, particularly beneficial for women.
As I prepared to attend a class at YOURS, I opted for light athletic wear, having learned from previous experiences that heavy clothing is not ideal for heated sessions. The studio, blending industrial and luxurious aesthetics, offers a comfortable environment with ample space between the 21 mats, ensuring that participants can fully engage without feeling cramped.
Upon entering the class, I was greeted warmly by staff, including co-founder Georgia, who provided a small towel and guided me to the changing rooms. The atmosphere was welcoming, setting the tone for an engaging workout.
During the session, the class began with core-focused exercises that felt manageable until our instructor, Jess, announced the warm-up was over. The pace quickened significantly with various glute exercises that proved challenging. Despite the intensity, the infrared heat felt dry and breathable, allowing for an enjoyable workout without the suffocating humidity often found in traditional hot yoga studios.
The session included a variety of movements that tested my endurance while remaining accessible for all fitness levels. The instructor provided clear guidance, making it easy to follow along, and the camaraderie among participants created a supportive environment.
Following the class, I left feeling invigorated, with a post-workout glow and a sense of accomplishment. Although I experienced some muscle soreness in the days that followed, the overall experience was one of the best workouts I had encountered.
While infrared Pilates may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those who are pregnant or managing specific health conditions, it caters to a broad spectrum of fitness levels. Modifications are available, ensuring that all participants can safely engage with the practice.
For those new to infrared Pilates, Jess Fraser recommends attending one to two classes weekly to allow time for recovery. More seasoned practitioners may benefit from participating in two to four classes weekly, balancing infrared with other Pilates styles to maximize strength and recovery benefits.
As the trend of infrared workouts continues to grow, YOURS is poised to make a significant impact on the UK fitness scene. For individuals seeking an intense, effective workout in a supportive environment, this studio may just provide the solution.
