Family Celebrates Miraculous Journey of Baby Liam After Surgeries
A Cincinnati family is celebrating their son Liam’s extraordinary journey after he was born with a rare condition that caused part of his brain to protrude through his forehead. The condition, known as encephalocele, was detected during a routine scan when Hannah Sachs was 22 weeks pregnant. Despite the initial fear and uncertainty, Liam entered the world in March 2023 without complications.
Hannah Sachs, a 32-year-old research coordinator, described the moment she first saw her son as unforgettable. “He was beautiful, and his mere presence was a blessing,” she said. However, Liam’s appearance was different from other newborns; he had a large sac of fluid, affectionately nicknamed “squishy” by his family, on his forehead. This abnormality required immediate attention, and Liam was taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
The first few weeks were filled with emotional ups and downs. “It was a complete rollercoaster of emotions,” Hannah recounted. “All I cared about was his ability to live outside of the womb – everything else we would figure out.” After 13 days in the NICU, Liam was discharged but required supplemental oxygen due to fluctuating oxygen levels.
Just two weeks later, Liam’s health took another turn when he developed severe hydrocephalus, a condition characterized by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. This required an emergency shunt to drain the fluid. “He was one month old and having his first brain surgery,” Hannah recalled, highlighting the challenges faced by her family.
Liam underwent a successful shunt placement but faced further surgery at six months of age to remove the encephalocele and reconstruct his skull. The complicated procedure lasted 11 hours in September 2023. “Because of where the encephalocele was formed, it caused a lot of his skull to be deformed, so they were able to correct a lot of that during this surgery,” Hannah explained.
Liam spent 11 days recovering in intensive care, during which he struggled with irritability and vomiting. A physical therapist later diagnosed him with cerebral palsy (CP) at 10 months old. This neurological condition affects movement and coordination, and while it was not a surprise to the family, it was a significant realization for Hannah.
“It’s sometimes hard for us to fully grasp because it’s a lifelong disability,” she noted. Despite this diagnosis, Hannah remains optimistic about Liam’s future. “He is doing really great. He has been in a lot of therapies – occupational, speech, feeding, aquatic, and music – and has really developed and learned a lot,” she shared.
Liam, now thriving, has begun to walk and is even attempting to speak, with words like “mama” and “dada” becoming part of his vocabulary. “I love hearing his voice,” Hannah said, expressing her joy in witnessing his progress. “He is so strong and resilient. Despite his limitations, he is adventurous and loves to push limits.”
Hannah emphasized the importance of celebrating every milestone, no matter how small. “At one stage, we weren’t sure if Liam would ever stop being fed through a tube, but he now enjoys his meals exclusively by mouth,” she explained. Liam did not walk unassisted until he was two years old, but his determination has been inspiring.
Living with cerebral palsy presents unique challenges, as explained by Dr. Zoe Williams, a general practitioner. She noted that while the condition is lifelong, symptoms and care strategies can evolve. “Healthy lifestyles, including exercise and therapy, play a crucial role in managing the condition,” Dr. Williams said.
Hannah reflected on her journey as a mother. “This life is hard but so beautiful,” she stated. “I wish he didn’t have to have so many surgeries or go to as many therapies, but he is so resilient, determined, strong, and brave.” She added that Liam is “imperfectly perfect in every way,” emphasizing the love and pride she feels as his mother.
As Liam continues to grow, he remains a source of inspiration for his family. “Everything that he has overcome so far in his life is a part of his story. He proves people wrong daily,” Hannah concluded, highlighting the strength and spirit of her son.
