East Hants MP Voices Concerns Over Petersfield Hospital Plans

East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds has expressed significant concerns regarding plans for Petersfield Hospital, particularly the proposed closure of the rehabilitation and palliative care ward. The Hampshire NHS Trust intends to shut down 21 rehabilitation beds in the Rowan Ward as part of an initiative aimed at enhancing home-based care in South East Hampshire. Although no formal changes will take effect until the Hants & IOW Integrated Care Board reaches a decision, staff have reportedly been informed that the ward is expected to close in late January 2024.

During a recent presentation to the Hampshire County Council committee, Hinds acknowledged that the Trust provided a compelling argument for prioritizing home care. He noted, however, that several critical questions remain unanswered for residents in Petersfield and nearby Alton.

“It is vital we scrutinise these decisions and their impact locally – and that is what I have been doing,” said Hinds in a statement. He highlighted the importance of the recent Health and Adult Social Care (HASC) Select Committee hearing, which served as a platform for local officials to hold health services accountable.

Councillors Andrew Joy, Marge Harvey, and Andy Tree all raised pertinent questions during the session. Additionally, Councillor Rob Mocatta made a significant deputation to address concerns about the proposed changes.

While Hinds is pleased that some adjustments have been made to the initial plan, including the introduction of a limited number of “surge” bed capacities at Petersfield Hospital for periods of high demand, he remains apprehensive. “Crucially, the Trust and the ICB have also agreed to report back on what happens in practice, particularly regarding the availability of community hospital beds in Alton and Petersfield for those that need them,” he noted.

The MP emphasized the importance of these changes not only for the community but also for the dedicated staff involved, many of whom face uncertainty regarding their future roles. Hinds affirmed his commitment to closely monitor the developments, underscoring the impact of these decisions on local families during critical times.

As the situation evolves, Hinds assures constituents that he will continue to advocate for transparency and accountability in the decision-making process surrounding Petersfield Hospital.
