British Youth Spend £6,500 Annually on Unconventional Beauty Trends

A recent survey reveals that young individuals in the UK are investing over £6,500 annually on unconventional wellness and beauty treatments. Traditional advice typically focused on the basics—cleanse, tone, moisturise, and maintain hydration. However, today’s social media generation is gravitating towards more extravagant options, such as salmon sperm facials, collagen supplements, weight loss injections, and even mushroom powders.

The study, conducted by Pukka Herbs, indicates that British women spend an average of £554 each month on beauty and wellness, while men are not far behind, spending approximately £431. Despite this significant expenditure, 94% of the respondents expressed a desire to return to simpler health and wellness routines.

Changing Perspectives on Self-Care

Among the 2,000 individuals surveyed, nearly half reported having a regular self-care routine. Approximately 37% of participants use skin-boosting collagen, and 31% take multi-vitamin pills or opt for injections. Yet, a striking 52% of those under 40 find it overwhelming to keep pace with modern beauty trends. Additionally, 25%49% of respondents having purchased them in recent years. Probiotic skincare follows closely behind at 36%. However, nearly a quarter of participants, 23%, reported feeling misled by the latest wellness products, often left disappointed by their actual benefits.

According to the survey, many individuals reflect on the simpler health practices of older generations. A significant 68% of respondents look back at their parents and grandparents’ routines, which predominantly emphasized healthy eating and regular exercise. In fact, 79% believe that self-care was a more straightforward concept 25 years ago.

The Call for Simplicity in Wellness

Respondents endorsed fundamental health principles that older generations valued, such as adequate sleep (72%), proper hydration (65%), and spending time outdoors (52%). In line with this sentiment, 92% of those surveyed agree that connecting with nature positively influences both physical and mental health, with 47%Eleonora Zoani, Senior Herbal Blending Manager at Pukka, emphasizes the importance of returning to nature-based solutions. She stated, “From expensive ‘miracle’ remedies to artificial products, we’re living in a time where our modern wellness routines have become a source of overwhelm. Reconnecting with nature and embracing the daily consumption of herbal teas allows us to harness the benefits that herbs have to offer.”

As consumers navigate a landscape filled with innovative yet bewildering trends, the findings suggest a growing desire for a more grounded approach to beauty and wellness. The top 15 beauty products currently capturing the attention and finances of young Brits include:
