The £430,000 active travel scheme in Cookstown is set to commence on January 5, 2024. This project aims to extend approximately 1.1 kilometers of new footway and cycleway along the A29 Dungannon Road, enhancing connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists. The initiative, announced by Infrastructure Minister Kimmins, is part of a broader effort to promote active travel options in the region.

Minister Kimmins emphasized the importance of this scheme, stating, “This scheme will greatly enhance provision for walking, wheeling and cycling in the Cookstown area by extending the current footway/cycleway on the A29 Dungannon Road and providing further links to the existing network.” The minister noted that such projects reflect the Department’s commitment to fostering healthy and environmentally friendly transport alternatives, encouraging residents to consider options beyond car travel for local journeys.

To ensure safe execution of the works, a one-way lane closure will be implemented on the A29 Dungannon Road for northbound traffic. This closure will be in effect from 09:30 to 16:30, Monday to Friday, over a period of sixteen weeks. During these hours, traffic will be redirected via Annagh Road and Sandholes Road. Additionally, access to Killycolp Road, Strifehill Road, Old Loughry Road, and Ardcumber Road will be restricted to through traffic.

A temporary speed limit of 40mph will be enforced along a portion of the A29 Dungannon Road throughout the construction period, specifically between the Dungannon Road Roundabout and the Tullyard Road junction. The Department has planned the work and traffic management measures to reduce disruption, although road users should anticipate some delays and are advised to allow extra travel time in the area.

While local access will be accommodated, the Department has stressed the need for compliance with all temporary traffic restrictions to ensure safety during the construction process. The successful completion of the scheme within the designated sixteen-week timeframe will depend on favorable weather conditions.

This initiative is a significant step towards improving infrastructure in Cookstown, aiming to create a more accessible environment for all forms of transportation.
