Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Greenland Control Dispute
President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose tariffs on countries that do not support the United States’ efforts to assert control over Greenland. During a healthcare roundtable at the White House, Trump stated that countries such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland could face a 10% tariff on goods exported to the United States starting from February 1, 2026, with the rate increasing to 25% on June 1, 2026.
Trump expressed concern over what he termed a “very dangerous situation” for global security, noting that these nations have allegedly sent troops to Greenland for unknown reasons. He emphasized that the U.S. requires Greenland for national security and accused these countries of escalating risks that threaten global peace.
In a lengthy post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump elaborated on his administration’s historical financial support to Denmark and other nations, stating, “For years, we have subsidized Denmark and all EU countries by not charging tariffs or any other forms of fees. Now it is time for Denmark to return the favor — world peace is at stake!” He claimed that both China and Russia are interested in Greenland, highlighting the necessity for U.S. involvement to ensure security.
According to Trump, the U.S. has sought to purchase Greenland for over 150 years, and previous administrations have attempted this without success. He argued that the strategic importance of Greenland has increased due to advancements in military technology, referring to the “Iron Dome” system and its implications for protecting North America.
The tariffs are intended as leverage in negotiations with Denmark and other involved nations. Trump stated, “The tariff will be applied until a complete and final agreement on the purchase of Greenland is reached.” He called for immediate negotiations with Denmark and the other countries involved, asserting that the U.S. has provided maximum protection to these nations over decades.
As tensions grow over territorial claims and military presence in Greenland, the international community will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold. The U.S. government’s approach to Greenland represents a significant shift in foreign policy, emphasizing national security and strategic interests.
