Tom Misch Steps Back from Music to Prioritize Mental Health
Tom Misch, the acclaimed musician and producer from south London, has announced that he is “taking a step back from music.” This decision stems from the overwhelming intensity of the music industry, which he admits has taken a toll on his mental health. In an update shared with fans on social media, Misch articulated his need for a pause to reflect and recharge.
In his message, Misch explained, “I’m not one to post super personal stuff on socials but I felt some context is needed to inform you guys where I’ve been/where I’m going.” He acknowledged that his career has grown significantly over the years, noting, “This project got bigger than I ever imagined.” The artist expressed gratitude for the global support he has received, but revealed that the pressures became unsustainable.
Misch further elaborated on his journey, stating, “A few years ago the intensity of it all caught up with me and came at a cost to my mental health.” Recognizing the need for a break, he described his time away as “definitely needed and very formative.” This period has allowed him to explore his identity beyond music and focus on personal relationships, particularly with family and friends.
Engaging with Music Beyond the Spotlight
During his hiatus, Misch has engaged in music projects outside the traditional framework of releasing albums and touring. He mentioned setting up the Wildflower music workshops with producer Isaac Westmore, a venture he considers crucial for his artistic growth. He stated, “I also wanted to engage in music outside of releasing and touring.”
While Misch has been working on his music at his own pace, he emphasized that he prefers to do so privately, without the pressure of public expectations. “I’ve been tinkering away with [my] own music,” he shared, reflecting a desire for a more personal connection to his craft.
The artist made his debut with the album, Geography, in 2018, followed by the collaborative project What Kinda Music with Yussef Dayes in 2020. His most recent release, Happy Music, came out in 2023 under his alias Supershy. Misch also participated in Loyle Carner’s All Points East takeover in Victoria Park, London, in 2024.
Industry Support for Mental Health Initiatives
Misch’s experience resonates with broader challenges faced by musicians. In light of increasing concerns regarding mental health in the music industry, organizations are stepping up to provide support. Earlier this year, Universal Music Group announced a music mental health fund in collaboration with the Music Health Alliance. Additionally, a 24-hour mental health support service was launched, aimed at assisting individuals working in the industry.
In discussions surrounding mental health, various figures from the music sector have highlighted the “dangerous” impact of touring on artists. On World Mental Health Day in 2023, they shared insights and resources to promote well-being among musicians.
Tom Misch’s commitment to prioritizing his mental health serves as a vital reminder of the challenges artists face. As he embarks on this new chapter, he expressed appreciation to his fans for their steadfast support, stating, “Thanks for sticking around and supporting me through this next chapter.”
