Stunning Revival of Fiddler on the Roof Opens at Sunderland Empire
The much-anticipated revival of the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof opened at the Sunderland Empire recently, delivering a powerful performance that captivated audiences. This renowned production, originally staged in 1964, is based on the short stories of Sholem Aleichem and explores the tension between tradition and modernity within a Jewish community in early 20th-century Russia.
The production’s arrival in Sunderland marks a key moment in its UK tour, and it has been met with enthusiasm from theatre-goers. Matthew Woodyatt takes centre stage as Tevye, the father of five daughters, whose struggles reflect the broader challenges faced by his community. Woodyatt’s portrayal is both heartfelt and humorous, drawing the audience into Tevye’s poignant journey as he navigates the complexities of family and faith.
Outstanding Performances and Musicality
The cast’s exceptional talent elevates the production. Jodie Jacobs shines as Golde, Tevye’s wife, bringing both vocal prowess and comic timing to her role. The performances of the three eldest daughters—Tzeitel, played by Natasha Jules Bernard; Chava, portrayed by Hannah Bristow; and Hodel, brought to life by Georgia Bruce—each add depth to the narrative. Particularly noteworthy is Bristow’s Chava, whose emotional duet with the Fiddler stands out as a highlight of the performance.
Musical elements play a crucial role in the production, with an on-stage band enhancing the live experience. This approach, increasingly popular in contemporary theatre, allows the audience to appreciate the instrumental compositions that are often relegated to the background. The Fiddler, performed by Raphael Papo, embodies the spirit of the Jewish community, seamlessly transitioning between scenes and adding a haunting quality to the overall atmosphere.
Creative Direction and Design
The production is directed by Jordan Fein, known for his successful revivals in the West End. Fein’s connection to the material is personal; his ancestors migrated from near Kyiv, paralleling the journey depicted in the musical. His direction, combined with the choreography of Julia Cheng, creates a vibrant and engaging theatrical experience. The choreography balances traditional cultural elements with modern techniques, notably in the celebrated bottle dance sequence, which garnered applause even before its conclusion.
The visual design by Tom Scutt complements the narrative beautifully. The movable roof of the set, combined with striking lighting designed by Aideen Malone, creates an immersive environment that draws the audience into the world of Anatevka. The contrasting use of bold spotlights and delicate candlelight enhances emotional moments, particularly during songs like “Sunrise, Sunset.”
As the first act concluded after a lengthy 90 minutes, the audience was left in awe of the production’s artistry and emotional resonance. The careful blend of set design, lighting, and choreography kept viewers engaged, making them feel as though they were part of Tevye’s world rather than mere spectators.
The revival of Fiddler on the Roof is a testament to the enduring power of musical theatre. It invites audiences to reflect on the delicate balance between tradition and change, and the familial bonds that shape our identities. Those in Sunderland are encouraged to experience this intimate and monumental production before its final performance at 19:30 on November 29, 2023.
