Secret Santa Fiascos: When Holiday Cheer Turns Sour
Secret Santa gift exchanges can often bring joy and camaraderie among colleagues, but for some, the experience has turned into a source of lasting discomfort. Susanna Beves, a former teacher at an international school in Germany, faced one of the most distressing Secret Santa moments when she opened a gift that left her questioning the spirit of the tradition.
The gift itself—a solitaire game—might have been pleasant under normal circumstances, but the accompanying note shattered that illusion. It stated that the gift was chosen for her because she was “single and lonely and likely to remain so, as I had no friends.” Beves, now 57, recalls the moment vividly: “It was the most awful thing. I just wanted to cry.” Surrounded by 60 colleagues, she felt the weight of the note’s words and immediately disposed of both the gift and the note, marking the end of her participation in Secret Santas for years.
When Jokes Go Awry
Beves’ experience is not unique. Gift exchanges intended to foster goodwill can sometimes backfire, leading to feelings of humiliation and resentment. Shelley Poole, managing director of Wellington HR consultancy, acknowledges that while Secret Santa can be enjoyable, it can also go awry when participants fail to consider the sensitivities of their colleagues. “Sometimes people take things a bit far and they don’t necessarily think about the person who’s going to be opening the gifts,” she remarks.
Humorous gifts can easily cross the line into inappropriate territory. For instance, Tony O’Brien, now 59, experienced a particularly painful moment during a Secret Santa at his first job with the Northern Ireland civil service. After sharing the story of his dog, a white boxer that had bitten an elderly woman, O’Brien received an insensitive gift: six tins of dog food, puppy training pads, and two inflatable dogs. “I tried to pretend that I got the joke, but I was horrified,” he recalls. “It’s a horrible story. And why anybody would think to make light of it like that, especially in such a public way, was beyond me.”
In another case, Georgie Goldstein, 33, received a set of couples’ mugs shortly after a breakup. The mugs read “morning gorgeous” and “morning handsome,” and although she could see the humor, it “hit a bit of a nerve.” “It was a really, really terrible gift,” she admits, yet she appreciates how it sparked a more engaging conversation among colleagues.
Finding the Right Balance
While some participants have learned to laugh off unfortunate gift choices, others have faced conflict as a result of their reactions. Ian, a 62-year-old from Salford, experienced fallout after reacting negatively to a magnetic jigsaw puzzle given by a close colleague. Despite liking the gift, he expressed that it wasn’t suitable for his home, leading to tension that lasted for weeks. “She just turned around and she gave me absolute daggers,” Ian recounts, highlighting how misunderstandings can sour workplace relationships.
Poole has encountered numerous complaints related to Secret Santa exchanges over her two decades in HR. She emphasizes the importance of respectful gift-giving and encourages colleagues to be mindful of the potential impact of their choices. “What definitely isn’t the resolution is telling someone that they’ve had a sense of humour failure, because people are entitled to be upset,” she states. In some instances, inappropriate gifts can lead to serious consequences, including harassment claims.
Workplaces have taken various measures to mitigate the risks associated with Secret Santa exchanges. Some have banned the practice altogether after multiple incidents of inappropriate gifts, while others have implemented mandatory identity disclosure for gift-givers or allowed recipients to submit wishlists. Interestingly, Goldstein opposes the idea of wishlists, arguing that the unpredictable nature of Secret Santa is part of its appeal. “The fun of Secret Santa is trying to guess who might have got you this gift,” she asserts.
Reflecting on her own experience, Beves remains cautious about participating in gift exchanges. Although she eventually agreed to join a Secret Santa again, it was with the condition that the name of the giver would be revealed. “It upset me so much,” she explains. “Secret Santas are giving for the sake of giving in so many ways. I don’t see the point really.”
Ultimately, the Secret Santa experience can be a double-edged sword. While some may cherish the fun and laughter it brings, others have learned that poorly chosen gifts can lead to lasting discomfort and even alter how they engage with their colleagues in the future. As the holiday season approaches, workplaces may need to reconsider how to foster a spirit of goodwill without risking the emotional wellbeing of their employees.
