Sean Penn Sparks Controversy by Smoking at Golden Globes 2026
Sean Penn, known for his long-standing smoking habit, created a stir during the 2026 Golden Globes held on January 12, 2026. The actor was reportedly seen lighting a cigarette at his table inside the venue, despite the event’s non-smoking policy. According to a report from Vanity Fair, guests at the ceremony had been seeking outdoor areas to smoke, but Penn’s decision to light up inside was particularly notable.
An unnamed director revealed to Vanity Fair, “I saw him just light up inside the theater, right at his table.” The incident has drawn attention, especially given Penn’s previous disregard for smoking restrictions during public appearances. In past interviews and events, such as the Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2018 and a press conference at the 2024 Marrakech International Film Festival, Penn has been spotted smoking without hesitation.
The Golden Globes ceremony, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, included a series of light-hearted roasts directed at various attendees, including Penn himself. In her opening monologue, Glaser humorously referred to him as a “sexy leather handbag,” poking fun at his defiance of Hollywood’s youth-centric standards. The audience responded with laughter as she added, “Everyone in this town is obsessed with looking younger. Meanwhile, Sean Penn is like, ‘What if I slowly morph into a sexy leather handbag?'”
Glaser’s jokes did not stop with Penn. She also commented on his humanitarian efforts, quipping that he travels to conflict zones not solely for altruistic purposes, but also for recreational activities. “Sean Penn will actually go to the places in the world that need help the most, and he will do cocaine there,” she joked, prompting further laughter from the crowd.
Despite the humor directed his way, Penn appeared to take Glaser’s comments in stride, chuckling along with the audience. His ability to laugh at himself during the event showcased a more relaxed side of the seasoned actor, who has often been a polarizing figure in Hollywood.
The 2026 Golden Globes were filled with other notable moments, including Glaser’s controversial joke about Jeffrey Epstein’s “heavily redacted” client list. The host’s sharp wit contributed to a lively atmosphere, as she deftly balanced humor with commentary on current events.
As the night progressed, Penn’s presence and the smoking incident did not overshadow the achievements recognized at the ceremony. Awards were distributed across various categories, celebrating outstanding performances in film and television, with Penn himself nominated for his role in “One Battle After Another.”
While the Golden Globes are often a platform for celebration, Penn’s smoking incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing debates surrounding smoking in public spaces, especially within high-profile environments like award shows. As the entertainment industry continues to navigate changing social norms, Penn’s actions highlight the complexities of balancing personal habits with public expectations.
