Rammstein’s Richard ZK Recalls Risky Guitar Quest in East Germany
Guitarist Richard ZK, known for his work with the band Rammstein, recently shared a captivating story about his quest for a Fender Stratocaster during his youth in East Germany. The musician’s experience highlights the challenges faced in a divided nation and the lengths to which he went to acquire his first proper electric guitar.
Born in 1967, ZK grew up in a country still grappling with the aftermath of the Second World War. East Germany, under communist rule, faced significant economic difficulties compared to its western counterpart. The iconic Berlin Wall symbolized this division, restricting access to goods, including musical instruments. In an interview with Guitar World, ZK recounted his desire for a Fender Stratocaster, inspired by the music of artists like Jimi Hendrix.
“I had one crappy thing made by Diamant,” ZK explained, reflecting on his early guitar. “My wish at that time… was to own a Fender Stratocaster. In my heart, that’s the one I felt I needed to have. But we couldn’t get them in East Germany.”
To realize his dream, ZK devised a plan that involved both financial risk and trust in an unknown individual.
“I was selling jewelry in the markets at the time and ended up exchanging 12,000 East Marks into 1,200 West Marks,” he recalled. “I met a guy in a coffee shop who traveled between the East and West. I didn’t know him or trust him. But I gave him all of that money in the hope he would bring me a Strat next time he was over. I had no idea if I would ever see him again.”
After parting with a substantial amount of money, ZK faced a tense wait. Three months passed with no news, leading him to worry he had been foolish to trust a stranger. “I was thinking I’d been really stupid; of course, he was going to take the money for himself,” he admitted.
As Christmas approached, ZK’s hopes were reignited when a guitar bag appeared at his doorstep. Inside was the coveted black Stratocaster he had long desired.
Yet, the reality of owning this iconic instrument fell short of his expectations. “My expectations of the Fender were so high because it was a serious guitar with proper pickups,” he said. “I thought it would help me play all the things I wanted to play… which led to frustration.”
Transitioning from his previous guitar, which featured humbuckers, to the Fender’s single-coil pickups proved challenging. ZK soon realized that the sound he had envisioned did not match his experience. “I was used to playing humbuckers on that crappy Diamant guitar. The single-coils didn’t sound right; I was wondering what the [expletive] they were,” he reflected. Ultimately, this led him to sell the guitar.
Since then, ZK has made significant strides in his musical career. He has been using ESP guitars since 1996, three years into his journey with Rammstein. His latest signature model features a pair of Fishman Fluence pickups, allowing him to explore new sonic possibilities.
ZK’s story not only sheds light on his personal journey but also serves as a reminder of the unique challenges faced by artists in divided nations. The pursuit of creativity often comes with risks and sacrifices, reflecting a universal desire to connect with music and art.
