Christian author Philip Yancey announced his withdrawal from public ministry following the revelation of a long-term extramarital affair. This disclosure has left many of his loyal readers and followers in shock. The 75-year-old writer, renowned for his works addressing themes of grace, suffering, and doubt, stated he will step back from public engagements to seek counselling and accountability.

In an email sent to Christianity Today on 6 January 2024, Yancey confessed to having engaged in an eight-year affair with a married woman. He acknowledged that this relationship contradicted the principles he has long advocated regarding marriage and faith. Yancey expressed remorse for the pain his actions have inflicted on his wife, the woman’s husband, and their families.

“To my great shame, I confess that for eight years I wilfully engaged in a sinful affair with a married woman,” Yancey wrote. “My conduct defied everything that I believe about marriage. It was also totally inconsistent with my faith and my writings and caused deep pain for her husband and both of our families.” He noted that he has confessed “before God and my wife” and is committed to professional counselling and an accountability programme. Yancey also recognized that his actions may undermine the trust that many readers have placed in his work.

Yancey chose not to identify the woman involved, citing a desire to protect her and her family’s privacy. He included a statement from his wife, Janet Norwood Yancey, who described her feelings of trauma and devastation. Despite this, she affirmed her commitment to their marriage vows. “I accept and understand that God through Jesus has paid for and forgiven the sins of the world, including Philip’s,” she stated.

Following the public revelation of his affair, Yancey’s name was removed from a speaking engagement at Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, California. His social media accounts have also been taken down as he retreats from the public eye.

Yancey has been a significant figure in evangelical literature for over five decades. His career began in 1971 as an editor at Campus Life Magazine, a Christian publication aimed at youth. He spent eight years there before joining Christianity Today, where he served as editor-at-large for approximately 30 years. His work includes contributions to various major publications, including Reader’s Digest, The Atlantic, and Christian Century.

Over the years, Yancey has interviewed prominent figures such as former U.S. Presidents and celebrated artists, including U2 frontman Bono and evangelist Billy Graham. His books, which tackle spiritual and theological questions, have sold more than 15 million copies and have been translated into 40 languages. Yancey is a two-time recipient of the ECPA Christian Book of the Year award for his works, including The Jesus I Never Knew and What’s So Amazing About Grace?.

According to estimates from People AI, Yancey’s net worth in 2026 is projected to be around $8.59 million, reflecting decades of writing, speaking, and journalism.

Yancey’s personal journey has deeply influenced his writing. Born on 4 November 1949 in Atlanta, he was raised in a strict, fundamentalist church environment. His father, a preacher, died shortly after he was born, which shaped Yancey’s early struggles with faith. He later attended Columbia Bible College, where he met Janet Norwood, whom he married in 1970.

As the couple navigates this public revelation and its aftermath, they face a complex marital crisis, focusing on rebuilding trust and determining their future together.
