Netflix Viewers Rediscover Sheridan Smith’s ‘Mrs Biggs’ Drama

Netflix subscribers are increasingly tuning in to the crime drama *Mrs Biggs*, featuring acclaimed actress Sheridan Smith, which originally aired on ITV in 2012. The series has climbed into the platform’s top 10 TV shows, prompting many to reconsider their weekend plans in favor of this compelling five-part story.
Set against the backdrop of the infamous 1963 Great Train Robbery, *Mrs Biggs* explores the tumultuous relationship between Charmian Biggs, portrayed by Smith, and her husband Ronnie Biggs, played by Daniel Mays. The narrative unfolds from their initial meeting on a train to the dramatic heist that would define their lives, ultimately leading to their divorce in 1976.
The drama begins with a young Ronnie expressing optimism to Charmian, stating, “The future is full of possibilities. The past will only drag you down.” This moment sets the stage for their subsequent descent into a life of crime, culminating in the notorious robbery that captured national attention.
While some critics have described the series as a sanitized version of events, it draws inspiration from a heartfelt letter Ronnie Biggs sent to Charmian after the tragic death of their son, Nicholas. Notably, Charmian served as a consultant for the show, providing insights that enhance its authenticity.
Writer and executive producer Jeff Pope aimed to depict a romantic tale without glorifying the criminal aspects of Biggs’s life. “We show Ron as perhaps a little too wilfully optimistic and Charmian is the cold voice of reason throughout,” he explained in an interview with *The Guardian*. He emphasized the importance of addressing the harsh realities of their lives, stating, “In the first episode, they steal, he strikes her, and we acknowledge the fact he had a criminal record.”
The reception of *Mrs Biggs* has been overwhelmingly positive, both at the time of its release and now as it gains renewed interest on Netflix. Viewers have taken to social media to share their admiration for the series. One user expressed, “*Mrs Biggs* on Netflix, possibly one of the best things I have ever watched,” while another remarked on the successful collaboration between Pope and Smith, calling their past projects “outstanding work.”
As *Mrs Biggs* continues to attract viewers, it stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of well-crafted storytelling, particularly when it intertwines historical events with personal narratives. The series is available for streaming on both Netflix and ITVX, allowing a new generation to engage with this gripping tale of love, crime, and consequence.
In addition to *Mrs Biggs*, Netflix’s top 10 list features other notable shows such as *Plebs*, a comedic take on life in 26 BC Rome, and *Wednesday*, which brings back the iconic character in a new season. Viewers can also enjoy *Loch Ness*, a gripping detective series set in the Scottish Highlands, and *Untamed*, starring Eric Bana as a parks special agent investigating a mysterious death in Yosemite National Park.
*Mrs Biggs* not only highlights the extraordinary life of a notorious figure in British crime history but also showcases the talent of Sheridan Smith as a leading actress capable of captivating audiences with her powerful performances. As the drama continues to resonate with viewers, it reaffirms the significance of storytelling in reflecting the complexities of human relationships amidst extraordinary circumstances.
