Meme ’67’ Named Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year for 2025
The meme “67,” inspired by the rapper Skrilla and his song ‘Doot Doot (67)’, has been awarded the title of Word of the Year for 2025 by Dictionary.com. This recognition highlights how internet culture continues to influence language, with “67” emerging as a prominent term in online conversations throughout the year.
Dictionary.com reported that searches for “67” surged dramatically starting in June 2025, increasing more than sixfold during the summer months. This significant rise in interest appears to be unique among two-digit numbers, indicating a cultural phenomenon surrounding the term. The website emphasized that “67” exemplifies how quickly new words can permeate global discourse, particularly among younger generations.
In their announcement, Dictionary.com noted the term’s potential to “frustrate” some individuals, characterizing it as having “all the hallmarks of brainrot.” This reflects a growing trend where internet slang evolves into accepted language, often mirroring generational shifts in communication styles. The term “67” triumphed over other contenders, including phrases like “Aura Farming,” the “TNT emoji,” “Clanker,” and “Tariff,” showcasing its widespread appeal.
The award for “67” follows a similar trend, as the previous year’s winner, “demure,” also emerged from the realm of internet culture. This back-to-back recognition suggests a continuing influence of online trends on everyday language.
In an interesting twist, Skrilla revealed that his song, which sparked the meme, will feature in the highly anticipated video game Grand Theft Auto 6. In a conversation with comedians Shane Gillis and Matt McCusker, he expressed excitement, stating, “Yeah, 67 is on there. I’m going to be my own person on there, playing my own music.” Such a connection between popular music and gaming underscores the intertwined nature of contemporary entertainment mediums.
As language evolves, the recognition of “67” as Word of the Year serves as a reminder of the dynamic relationship between culture and communication. The term’s journey from a catchy lyric to a widely recognized phrase illustrates the rapid pace at which language can change in our digital age.
