Louise Thompson Reveals Struggles After Childbirth Trauma
Former reality television star and influencer Louise Thompson has shared a deeply personal account of her experiences following the traumatic birth of her son, Leo, in 2021. The Made in Chelsea alumna disclosed that she is unable to have more children due to severe complications and the resulting psychological impact.
Thompson, now 35, faced life-threatening challenges during childbirth, including a post-natal haemorrhage that required emergency surgery. She developed Asherman’s Syndrome, a condition where scar tissue forms in the uterus, complicating her recovery and future reproductive options. The trauma has left her with post-traumatic stress, significantly impacting her mental health and family planning.
In her advocacy for women’s health, Thompson has aligned herself with former Conservative MP Theo Clarke, who experienced her own childbirth difficulties, including incontinence and a third-degree perineal tear after the birth of her daughter, Arabella. Together, they are spearheading a petition with the aim to gather 100,000 signatures to prompt a Parliamentary debate on maternity care in the UK. The initiative seeks to appoint a commissioner to oversee and improve maternity services.
Thompson expressed concern about the growing number of women hesitant to pursue motherhood due to alarming accounts of birth trauma. She noted, “Women are losing trust in the system and, unfortunately, they probably don’t feel safe to give birth in British hospitals today.” Such sentiments resonate within her circle and broader discussions about maternity care.
Their petition follows Thompson’s testimony before the Birth Trauma All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) earlier this year, where she highlighted the urgent need for reform. The APPG has been instrumental in raising awareness and conducting national inquiries into the issue of birth trauma, emphasizing the need for systemic changes in maternal healthcare.
As Thompson and Clarke prepare to launch their petition in two weeks, they aim to shed light on the systemic issues plaguing maternity care, advocating for reforms that would ensure safer childbirth experiences for future generations.
Thompson’s openness about her struggles not only aims to foster dialogue around maternity rights but also serves as an urgent call to action for policymakers. Her story reflects a broader narrative of women advocating for their health and safety within the healthcare system.
