Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Transforms to Single Play in London
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the acclaimed West End show inspired by JK Rowling’s wizarding world, will be condensed into a single play format after a decade of performances as a two-part production. This change, announced on January 28, 2023, is set to take effect from October 6, 2023, aligning with similar adaptations seen in productions on Broadway and in countries such as Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Originally staged as a theatrical double bill, The Cursed Child follows the events that occur 19 years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Audiences were able to view parts one and two consecutively, either in a single day or over two evenings. The new version will be a two-act performance lasting approximately 175 minutes, including an interval.
Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender stated that this reimagining is intended to make the show “more accessible than ever before.” They emphasized that the new format will maintain the production’s “scale, illusions and theatrical magic, and emotional depth,” while allowing more viewers to enjoy the experience in one visit.
The final performances of the two-part version are scheduled for September 20, 2023. The original production, written by Jack Thorne in collaboration with Rowling and directed by John Tiffany, opened in July 2016 to widespread acclaim, with particular praise for its technical wizardry that brought the magic of the story to life.
The two-part format, however, required a significant investment from audiences, both in terms of time and cost. Each part runs for two hours and 40 minutes and two hours and 25 minutes respectively, with individual ticket prices ranging from £15 to £95 for each performance. The shift to a single play format is expected to alleviate some of this burden while still delivering the captivating narrative fans have come to love.
The adaptation mirrors changes made on Broadway, where the show was transformed into a single three-and-a-half-hour production in November 2021. The original cast members from the West End, including Jamie Parker as Harry and Noma Dumezweni as Hermione Granger, transitioned to the Broadway version when it opened in 2018.
As ticket prices across the West End continue to be a topic of discussion, with reports suggesting a potential rise of 5 percent in 2025, the pricing structure for the upcoming single production of The Cursed Child has yet to be announced. The move to a single production may influence ticket sales, attracting a wider audience eager to experience the magic of the wizarding world in a more accessible format.
This significant change marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing legacy of Harry Potter, ensuring that the story remains engaging and relevant for both new and returning audiences.
