Foo Fighters’ Pat Smear to Miss Tour Dates After Foot Injury
Pat Smear, the long-time guitarist of the Foo Fighters, will be absent from several upcoming tour dates due to a serious foot injury. The musician, known for his energetic performances, has sustained multiple broken bones in his left foot after what the band humorously described as a “bizarre gardening accident.”
The announcement was made via a playful social media post that mimicked a tabloid cover, stating, “BREAKING NEWS!” The band explained that Smear, born Georg Albert Ruthenberg, will miss the shows while he recuperates. They expressed their hopes for his swift recovery, noting, “We’ll miss our beloved Pat as much as you will, but we want him fully healed and back on his feet as soon as possible.”
Background on Pat Smear’s Career
Pat Smear has a rich history in rock music, having been a rhythm guitarist for the iconic band Nirvana before joining the Foo Fighters in 1994, shortly after the death of Kurt Cobain. After departing from the Foo Fighters in 1997, he returned as a touring guitarist in 2005 and was promoted to a full-time member in 2010. His contributions to the band’s sound and energy have been significant over the years.
The injury comes at a time when the Foo Fighters are preparing for several performances, including three shows scheduled for January 2024 in Mexico, Los Angeles, and Tasmania, Australia. In Smear’s absence, fellow musicians Jason Falkner, known for his work with Beck and St. Vincent, will step in to fill the role of guitarist during these dates.
Humorous Reference to Rock Culture
The lighthearted nature of the announcement also referenced a moment from Rob Reiner’s classic film “This is Spinal Tap,” which humorously discusses the fictional band’s drummer who met a similar fate. This clever nod to rock culture helped soften the blow for fans concerned about Smear’s injury.
As the Foo Fighters continue their tour, fans can look forward to seeing Jason Falkner perform alongside the remaining band members, while keeping their hopes high for Pat Smear’s recovery. The band has emphasized their commitment to ensuring Smear returns to the stage fully healed, underscoring the close-knit bond within the group.
