Exciting Cultural Events Unfold in Great Barrington This January
A series of vibrant cultural events is set to take place in Great Barrington and surrounding areas throughout January 2024, featuring music, community gatherings, and educational talks. These events aim to promote cultural appreciation and community engagement, highlighting the diverse artistic expressions in the region.
Afrobeat Concerts at Barrington Hall
Barrington Hall will host Afrobeat concerts featuring the band ARMO on January 16 and 17. The performances will take place on Friday from 20:00 to 23:00 and Saturday from 15:00 to 16:30. Founded by musicians from the acclaimed Antibalas band, ARMO includes trumpeter Jordan McLean, percussionist Marcus Farrar, and guitarist Nikhil P. Yerawadekar, among others. The band brings together a mix of talents from the Daptone Records family and the New York Afrobeat scene, presenting a dynamic blend of music rooted in the works of legends like Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Tony Allen.
The Saturday concert, titled “Afrobeat for Little Feet,” is specifically designed for children and will feature interactive elements to engage young audiences. Attendees can expect explanations about the instruments and rhythms that create the lively sound characteristic of Afrobeat music. This weekend celebration emphasizes the genre’s historical ties to social movements, fostering a sense of community and shared humanity through rhythm and joy.
Art and Music at the Clark Art Institute
On January 31, Luke Fischbeck will perform an original musical piece at the Clark Art Institute, inspired by the exhibition “Raffaella della Olga: Typescripts.” The performance is scheduled for 18:00 and will explore the concept of typewriter art as a form of musical expression. Fischbeck, known for his work with the sound art group Lucky Dragons, will present a solo piano composition alongside a live electronic mix based on recordings made at the Clark campus. This innovative approach merges visual art with auditory experiences, inviting attendees to engage with artistic practices in new ways.
Community Dinners at BRIDGE Solidarity House
The BRIDGE Solidarity House will resume its multicultural community dinners beginning January 9. These gatherings aim to provide nourishing meals and supportive environments where individuals can connect and share experiences. Each dinner features a culturally significant menu; the opening event will include Momma Lo’s Fried Chicken paired with traditional sides and dessert options. Future dinners will highlight diverse culinary traditions, with themes such as a Haitian Dinner and an Indigenous Heritage Meal in celebration of the Spring Solstice.
Community members are encouraged to participate in these gatherings, which are offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. Carry-out meals are available from 16:00 to 17:00, while the drop-in meal service runs from 17:00 to 19:00.
Educational Talk on the Ukraine-Russia War
On January 14, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Berkshire Community College will host a virtual talk titled “Ukraine-Russia War in the Era of Trump 2.0” by journalist James Brooke. The discussion will provide insights into the ongoing conflict and its implications on global politics. Brooke, a former foreign correspondent for the New York Times, will draw on his extensive experience covering Ukraine to offer an informative analysis of the situation. The event is scheduled for 19:00 and is free to the public, with registration available online.
Berkshire Lyric Calls for Singers
In addition, the Berkshire Lyric is inviting singers of all ages to join its spring season rehearsals. The organization, known for its community choral programs, will commence rehearsals for both adult and youth choruses on January 12. Interested participants are encouraged to audition, with concerts planned throughout the spring, including performances at Tanglewood and events celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary. Young singers can also join the tuition-free educational programs offered by Berkshire Lyric, which aims to foster musical talent in the community.
These events represent a rich tapestry of cultural engagement in the region, showcasing the importance of artistic expression and community solidarity. For more information and ticket details, interested individuals can visit the respective organization’s websites.
