Doug Liman’s “Killing Satoshi” Explores AI in Film Production
Filmmaker Doug Liman is set to push the boundaries of film production with his upcoming cryptocurrency-themed thriller, “Killing Satoshi.” The film, which features actors Casey Affleck and Pete Davidson, delves into the enigma surrounding Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin. It presents a narrative that intertwines conspiracy and technological advancement, as an elite group works to conceal the truth about Nakamoto’s identity.
The production, according to Variety, will employ innovative techniques, utilizing a “markerless performative capture stage.” This method allows for filming without traditional locations, showcasing how artificial intelligence (AI) can transform the filmmaking process. The casting notice from the United Kingdom indicates that the film will incorporate new AI technologies, raising questions about the future of performance capture in cinema.
Ryan Kavanaugh, a producer on the project, emphasized the ethical considerations involved in using AI. He stated that the team is committed to protecting the integrity of the actors’ performances. “We were very cautious, sensitive and overly protective of our actors to make sure we only use performance capture AI,” Kavanaugh explained. He assured that the production will not create “recognizable and identifiable digital replicas” without obtaining “prior written consent” from the actors involved.
As discussions around AI’s role in the entertainment industry intensify, the ongoing negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and major studios regarding contract terms are particularly relevant. The issue of ‘synthetic’ performances and the protection of actors’ likenesses are central to these discussions and could influence how films leverage new technologies in the future.
Filming for “Killing Satoshi” is scheduled to commence in the coming weeks in the United Kingdom. With its intriguing premise and cutting-edge production techniques, the film is poised to capture attention not just for its narrative, but also for its exploration of the impact of AI on the art of filmmaking. As the industry navigates these advancements, “Killing Satoshi” may provide a glimpse into the evolving relationship between technology and creative expression.
