Disney’s Future: Josh D’Amaro Leads Race to Succeed Bob Iger
The Walt Disney Company is preparing to name a successor for Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger, with Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, emerging as the frontrunner. Iger, who returned to the helm in late 2022 following the controversial exit of Bob Chapek, is set to conclude his extended tenure in March 2026. This transition has become one of the most scrutinised in corporate America, as Iger seeks to ensure a smooth handover.
Iger has taken a hands-on approach in the selection process, focusing on finding “the absolute right person for the job,” according to sources close to the company. D’Amaro, 54, has nearly three decades of experience within Disney. He currently oversees the company’s most profitable division, Disney Experiences, which includes theme parks, cruise lines, and consumer products. This segment generated approximately $8.12 billion in profit during the first nine months of fiscal 2025, surpassing the combined profits of Disney’s entertainment and sports units.
D’Amaro’s leadership has also been pivotal in guiding Disney’s ambitious $60 billion investment strategy. This initiative encompasses global park expansions, the introduction of new cruise ships, and the establishment of Disney’s first licensed resort in the Middle East. Additionally, he manages Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, further solidifying his influence across both physical and digital realms.
While D’Amaro is favoured, other candidates are still in contention. Dana Walden, Co-Chair of Disney Entertainment, has received accolades for her role in leading Disney+ to profitability and for producing critically acclaimed series such as *The Bear* and *Only Murders in the Building*. However, her involvement in the controversy surrounding the suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has reportedly raised concerns among some shareholders.
Other names on the shortlist include Alan Bergman, Walden’s fellow Co-Chair, and James Pitaro, Chairman of ESPN. Nevertheless, both are viewed as long shots in the race. Industry insiders describe the succession as a “two-horse race” primarily between D’Amaro and Walden, with the board expected to reach a decision in early 2026.
Despite the growing consensus around D’Amaro, Iger remains cautious in public discussions. At a recent breakfast in Santa Monica, an attendee mentioned that D’Amaro “will do a great job when he’s appointed CEO.” Iger reportedly “bristled” at this comment, affirming that no decision has yet been made. This moment highlighted the delicate nature of the succession process, particularly following Iger’s previous misjudgement in appointing Chapek.
A source close to the board stated, “He’s being extremely deliberate this time. He wants to leave the company in the right hands.” The next CEO will inherit an entertainment giant poised at a crossroads, facing a mix of opportunities and challenges. Disney must maintain profitability across its theme parks and resorts while revitalising its streaming strategy and addressing political challenges in Florida.
The incoming leader will also need to navigate new investments and uphold Disney’s brand dominance in a competitive global market. As Josh D’Amaro continues to lead the race, the outcome of this succession battle is set to shape Disney’s trajectory for years to come. Until the board confirms its decision, the high-stakes contest to succeed Bob Iger remains open.
