A new arts initiative in Burra, Scotland, is capturing attention as Gaada has announced a collaboration with storyteller and baker Jenny Watt. This partnership will explore Shetland’s ecology through the lens of colour, chemistry, and narrative. Watt, who has a background in food science, has been experimenting with plant-based pigments at the Toogs workshop. Her work will culminate in a publication and community workshops focused on recipes for these pigments, with an official launch planned for 2026.

Fishing Fund Controversy Raised in Parliament

Meanwhile, a debate regarding Shetland’s share of a new fishing fund has emerged in the Scottish Parliament. Beatrice Wishart, Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP), queried First Minister John Swinney about the allocation from the UK Government’s Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund. The fund has drawn criticism for offering Scotland only 8 percent of the available resources, which will then be distributed by the Scottish Government.

During a session at Holyrood, Wishart emphasized that 9 percent of the fish landed in the UK comes through Shetland ports. She questioned the percentage of the fund that Shetland can expect. “Shetland’s contribution to the fishing sector and UK economy is huge,” she stated. “While there needs to be a redress of the overall division of the pie at UK level, the Scottish Government should commit to an equitable division of funding.” Wishart underscored the importance of a healthy fishing sector to local businesses and the broader economy.

Upcoming Performances and Community Events

In cultural news, Shetland County Drama is preparing to present a modern adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale, Oliver Twist, from November 27 to 29. Directed by John Haswell, this version retains the essence of the original story while bringing it into a contemporary setting. Performances will be held at the Royal British Legion in Lerwick, starting at 19:30, with a matinee on November 29 at 14:30. Tickets are available for purchase online, but the production is not suitable for those under the age of 12.

Additionally, Shetland will celebrate Scottish Careers Week from November 10 to 14, with various events aimed at informing students and the local community about career opportunities. Events kick off at Sandwick Junior High School and will continue across all high schools on the islands. Parents and community members will have the chance to meet representatives from organizations such as Skills Development Scotland and the University of Highlands and Islands.

On November 22, Mareel will host its first-ever “story slam,” an event inspired by the Moth storytelling series. Organizers Liz Musser and Ruth Oliver invite participants to share true personal stories with the theme of “place.” Stories must be no longer than five minutes and should be told without notes. Interested storytellers can apply through an online form.

This series of events and initiatives highlights the vibrant community engagement in Burra and Shetland, showcasing the intersection of arts, education, and local economic discussions.
