Avatar: Fire and Ash has officially crossed the significant milestone of $1 billion (£740 million) at the global box office. This achievement marks James Cameron’s fourth film to reach the billion-dollar mark, following his previous successes with Titanic, Avatar, and Avatar: The Way of Water.

The film achieved this milestone on January 3, 2025, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. Despite concerns regarding franchise fatigue, especially as the third installment in the series debuted in cinemas, audiences have shown strong support. As of New Year’s Day, the film had grossed an impressive $935 million (£693 million), which includes $266 million (£197 million) from domestic markets and $699 million (£519 million) internationally.

On the following day, the film added another $14 million (£10.3 million) in North America from 3,832 theatres, bringing its domestic total to $280 million (£207 million). With these figures, it joins the ranks of only three Hollywood films released in 2025 that have surpassed $1 billion, following Lilo & Stitch at $1.038 billion and Zootopia 2, which has grossed $1.51 billion to date.

Cameron previously expressed concerns that a sluggish post-COVID box office and potential franchise exhaustion might hinder the performance of the third film, potentially impacting the planned fourth and fifth installments. In light of these worries, he indicated he would disclose plot details for the future films if they do not come to fruition. “I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,” Cameron shared with Entertainment Weekly. He added, “If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do. How’s that?”

The Avatar franchise has had a significant cultural and financial impact since its inception. The original Avatar, released in 2009, remains the highest-grossing film of all time, having earned over $2.9 billion (£2.1 billion). Its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, ranks third with a total of $2.3 billion (£1.7 billion).

In Avatar: Fire and Ash, the narrative continues from the events of its predecessor, focusing on the grief-stricken family of Jake Sully and Neytiri as they confront a new Na’vi tribe, the Mangkwan clan. Critics have noted the film’s ability to deliver value for audiences, with one three-star review from NME stating it is “hard to argue you don’t get your money’s worth,” even if it revisits familiar themes.

In addition to the film’s commercial success, Cameron has been vocal about various industry incidents during its promotion. He dismissed Matt Damon’s claims that he was offered the lead role in the first Avatar film and expressed disappointment over a joke made by Amy Poehler at the 2013 Golden Globes.

As Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to generate buzz at the box office, the future of the franchise remains a topic of interest for fans and industry observers alike.
