Anne Robinson, the veteran television presenter known for her role on The Weakest Link, is set to make her return to screens with a new series titled You Be The Judge. The announcement was made on February 5, 2024, confirming that Channel 5 has commissioned a full four-part series following the success of a one-off special that aired last year.

The new show will explore real-life sentencing hearings, reconstructing three cases in each episode. Viewers will have the opportunity to compare their judgments of convicted criminals against the actual verdicts delivered by judges. In her statement regarding the show, Robinson expressed her concerns about the justice system, stating, “How does a prison officer having sex with an inmate receive twice the sentence of a man who cold-bloodedly kills his wife? Our justice system is in chaos.”

Elliot Reed, the executive producer at Good TV, highlighted the unique nature of the series, describing it as a “challenging social experiment” that serves as public service television. He emphasized that sentencing is a topic rarely explored in depth, stating, “You Be The Judge informs and educates, and it’s also addictive TV.” Channel 5’s commissioning editor, Dan Louw, added that the show offers a “moving, infuriating, complex and always fascinating look at how the justice system really works.”

Robinson, who has been in the public eye since the 1980s, gained fame through various programs such as Question Time, Points of View, and Watchdog. She is particularly remembered for her sharp wit and no-nonsense approach as the host of The Weakest Link from 2000 to 2012. Reflecting on her past hosting style in an interview with The Oldie, Robinson noted that such candidness may not be acceptable in today’s television landscape. She remarked, “You’d never be able to say all that now. Half of it would be stamped out,” while also asserting that contestants appreciated her straightforwardness.

Robinson recalled a rehearsal with real contestants, where their competitive nature became evident. She shared, “I’d say, ‘Why are you voting off Janet?’ And they’d say, ‘Because she has Jesus sandals and quite bad BO.’ And I thought, ‘Great – we can all be ourselves.'” This candidness is part of what made her a beloved figure on television.

As she prepares for this new venture, Robinson’s insights into the justice system and her engaging presentation style are expected to resonate with audiences. You Be The Judge aims not only to entertain but also to provoke important discussions surrounding crime and punishment.
