X Launches Marketplace for Inactive Usernames Targeting Premium Users

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has announced the launch of a new initiative called the X Handle Marketplace. This feature allows select users to browse and request inactive usernames, marking a significant change in how the platform manages user handles.

How the Marketplace Functions

The X Handle Marketplace aims to redistribute usernames that are currently inactive. Eligible users, specifically those subscribed to the Premium Plus and Premium Business plans, will have the opportunity to search for and request these handles. The marketplace will feature both complimentary and paid options for users to acquire usernames.

According to a report from The Verge, the available handles will fall into two distinct categories. Some usernames will be free and may consist of full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric combinations. Conversely, rare handles will come at a cost, potentially ranging from $2,500 to over seven figures, depending on their demand and uniqueness.

Eligibility and Impact on Subscribers

Notably, this new marketplace is restricted to Premium subscribers only. When a user successfully acquires a new username, their previous handle will be temporarily frozen. If the user decides to downgrade their subscription, they will revert to using their old username.

This marketplace is viewed as a strategic move by X to boost its number of paid subscribers. By offering exclusive access to desirable usernames, the platform hopes to incentivize more users to opt for premium memberships.
