Turkish Airlines Targets 800 Aircraft by 2033, Expanding Fleet Significantly

Turkish Airlines has announced an ambitious plan to expand its fleet to 800 aircraft by 2033, coinciding with the airline’s centennial celebration. Currently operating 449 aircraft, the airline aims to cross the 500-aircraft threshold by the end of 2025, further solidifying its position as one of the world’s largest international carriers.

Since its establishment in 1933, Turkish Airlines has rapidly grown its network, now serving 131 countries across more than 350 destinations. This expansion is supported by increasing demand across its network, the strategic advantages of Istanbul as a global hub, and the rising contribution from cargo operations.

Fleet Growth and Market Position

According to data from ch-aviation, Turkish Airlines has experienced significant growth, doubling its fleet from 100 aircraft in 2006 to 300 by 2016, ultimately surpassing 400 in 2023. Prof. Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Board, stated that the airline is well-positioned to meet its growth targets due to “strong demand dynamics” and the operational benefits of its low-cost subsidiary, AJet.

The airline commands a global market share of approximately 2.3%, which is smaller than United Airlines’ 4.3%. Nevertheless, Turkish Airlines has outpaced competitors in growth over the past decade. With plans to operate over 378,000 flights this year, averaging more than 1,000 flights daily, the airline seeks to maintain its upward trajectory.

Bolat elaborated on the airline’s two-brand model, which allows Turkish Airlines to focus on its premium offerings while catering to price-sensitive markets through AJet. He emphasized that the expansion to over 500 aircraft by the end of 2025 is both strategically compelling and operationally sound.

Future Aircraft Orders and Strategic Acquisitions

Currently, Turkish Airlines operates a diverse fleet that includes a mix of Airbus and Boeing aircraft. This includes models such as the Airbus A320neo and A350-900, as well as Boeing 737-800s and 787-9 Dreamliners. The airline has more than 300 aircraft on order, covering various types, including the A321neo and A350.

At the recent IATA AGM in New Delhi, Bolat indicated that the airline is in discussions regarding a substantial aircraft order, potentially around 225 aircraft. This prospective order would include approximately 75 widebodies and 150 narrowbodies. In December 2023, Turkish Airlines finalized a deal with Airbus for 220 aircraft, including 150 A321neos and 70 A350s.

Moreover, the airline is exploring additional regional aircraft purchases, considering options like the Embraer E2 and Airbus A220. Bolat mentioned, “With Airbus, a portion of our sizeable order has been completed. We are also continuing our negotiations with Boeing and engine companies to expand our follow-up orders.”

In addition to fleet expansion, Turkish Airlines is looking at strategic acquisitions to enhance its global connectivity. Recently, the carrier acquired a minority stake in Spanish airline Air Europa for $349 million (€300 million), which is seen as a critical step in strengthening its position in Latin America.

During the latest earnings call, Bolat remarked, “The Air Europa move is a good opportunity for us… It will be a profitable investment, and we expect a good return.” The airline also holds a 49% stake in Air Albania and maintains codeshare agreements with major global carriers, further broadening its network.

As Turkish Airlines prepares for its centenary in 2033, the airline’s strategic growth plan reflects its commitment to enhancing its fleet and expanding its reach in the competitive aviation market.
